We have the 40 U.K CB channels around that part of the Band although it has very little use now.

The U.K 40 is be deregulated in the near future as far as I know and then the U.K will just have the 40 Cept channels that is the same frequencies used in the USA that is 40 mid band but on FM.

And No I don’t use CB http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Seems to me the best, and only reason SHOULD be that it's illegal?

Hi "chirp chirp" and all,

The freebanders chased everybody including the government off years ago, that's why it's free. I haven't heard anything but CBers there in 30 years.

SVD, uh, what's "illegal"? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I drive 80 mi/hr on the interstates - just not around the police. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Really though, I've no particular desire to operate freeband - we've 1M7 to play around in just above it after all. Why risk action against my licence when I don't have to?

I was just trying to point something out.

If you don't use the band because it's illegal and you consider yourself as a law abiding citizen, good for you, I respect that a lot.

But really the band is not in use by any two way communication service that require reliability (means basically all the comm. services) but is rather used by systems as OTH radars, and medical and industrial RF applications and so on. Nothing of these you can interfere with. They do interfere a lot with freeband communications but of course there's no way to complain about it.

What I think is freeband is like driving on the highway 15km/h above the speed limit, the cops won't even flinch

Especially here where good legit ham operators go on the freeband and give their call sign.
In Canada it's very relaxed too. Nobody seems to take this seriously anymore.

Well maybe I am missing something. Why would a LICENSED Ham want to operate on 11M or any other "FREEBAND". We have bands now that we don't use due to the low sunspot thing so what makes 11M any better right now. I will stay on the Ham Bands come hell or high water period.

On word: activity.

Well if the Hams would use the Ham Bands then there would be activity there and you wouldn't have to deal with the unlicensed "Freebanders" and incur the wrath of the FCC.

Now things may be different up there North of the Border but down here we have the FCC to deal with and I for ONE am not going to twist the tail of Uncle Charley.

Well, "illegal" is a sick bird of prey. OR; you can try to peruse the FCC's Enforcement Bureau's activity for the past few years. OR, you can just check Title 47 Code of Federal Regulations (NOT just Part 97!) for more specific information; remember, ignorance of the law is not considered an excuse.
But in general, unlicensed operation, or operating on unauthorized frequencies is considered enough to give our nation's symbol a good case of "intestinal upset."
