The Spring Sprint is on this evening, 2300-0300 GMT.
I have the dipole up as A3, with my usual end-fed wires for A1 and A2. I'm looking for that second contact! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
50125U and 50090C (the SKCC freq) are where I'll be desperately trying to get something, anything, going with the 551D.
I hope some magic brews up for 6 meters this evening.

All I heard so far was someone in a neighbouring grid square (em89), half an hour before it started. Couldn't reach him before he disappeared. So I went outside and tried to relocate the dipole; I've just got it back to where it was as I couldn't get a match on the darn thing.
I heard some stuff this early afternoon that may have been scatter.
Still trying...

Well, I gave up on the dipole (it's on the balcony ceiling - I suspected that it was surrounded by metal) and switched to A2 - the 90-ft. wire. Heard someone in EM79 calling and I called back, hoping that at least something worked. I got through though with a rather poor signal. We chewed the old socks awhile at 50135U and I decided to run out and switch back to the dipole to see if it was getting out at all. Ah, yes - MUCH better than the wire, 5 S units' worth (8 S units on RX). So it does work properly. I just haven't been getting through in general.
Am hearing nothing else. Those earlier hints of propagation have gone away. I'm still trying though.
Some notes on the dipole. I know you guys are laughing at me. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Anyway. I cut it for 51 MC as a compromise and came out fairly close - a perfect match at 50.8. Well, I'd not considered that the things are fairly sharp. SWR 3:1 at 50125 kc and worse at both 50090 and 52525. So, I lengthened it a few inches on both ends. Resonance went from 50800 to 50700 kc. I then lengthened it a foot on each end. That brought it to 50600 kc, still rather badly mismatched at 50125. I was out of room then so I added two ft. of wire to each end, the last ft. on each pointing down. That got it to 50400 kc, 2:1 at 50125, tolerable at 50090 and forget about FM simplex.
Since the thing is a bit under 10 ft. total when resonant at 50800, I'm more than a little mystified that adding another 4 ft. (40%!) will only bring it down by 400 kc.
Proximity to junk in the ceiling / walls?
---edit---
Add another contact, with a fellow in EM89. Two today, wheee! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

There's a bad heterodyne here at '140, some or other device in another apartment. '145?
I can't hear too well in any event. I heard the two locals working other stations just fine but I couldn't hear the other stations at all.
---edit---
Anyway, I gave '145 a whirl. Nuthin' heard except a brief off-frequency quack about half a minute or so after I quit polluting that part of the spectrum.

4 contacts without really trying ( sitting in front of the rig more than 5 minutes total ), with the RF output turned down to about 40 - 50 watts.
hmmm...not bad at all.
Imagine if I had actually tried...?
( yep, might have made 5 instead of 4 )
