I am getting back into radio after a few years away and I am looking at getting a dual band HT. Does anyone have any suggestions on what is good out there? I saw the Kenwood tri-bander and am wondering if anyone has experience with it. Is it able to be controlled thru a conputer and if so is it thru a USB connection? Does it have the power that it states? Any other models that have the power and computer controll that anyone can comment on?

Just looking for info.

When you say 'computer control' are you asking for CAT type control (PTT, Frequency changes, etc.) OR just the ability to up/download the memories?

The cable available from Kenwood for the TH-F6A has a DB-9 connector. There is an adapter for the DB-9 to USB you can find on eBay. But, the only functions available for the radio via computer are programming the memories.

Have you considered any of the Icom products? #Like the Icom T90A or the new Icom 91A? #From experience with the Icom models I can highly recomend them. #They are easy to use and are very good performing radio`s.

This is something I wrote on eham a while back about the Icom 91A and thought you might like to read this information.

In my opinion the Icom 91A is in a league of its own when it comes to Technology, innovation, performance and quality. It presents a solid construction and a Sophisticated look that comes second to none. I can not comment on the DV function as I did not opt for that but there is always room to upgrade to it on this HT at a later stage. At first I had some difficulty in working out the programming procedure but after reading and re reading the instruction manual a few times it finally clicked. Now it is as easy as to program and it only takes a few minutes. I really like the dual watch Rx function. Great for listening in on a favorite frequency whilst using the other band or visa versa. Then at a push of a button you will be back to single band Rx. It has very easy key pad navigation and a great menu system. The large Dot-matrix screen is very clear and easy to read in any light condition. The LCD contrast can be user selected too. It has a band scope function which is a great thing for searching active frequencies. With 1 or 5 watts to choose from it makes it versatile. DTMF makes for easy access to Echolink and IRLP. On air audio reports are fantastic with compliments all round and RX audio is also very good too. My family and I are heading off on a holiday soon so I am looking forward to taking my IC-91A along for the ride. It is small and not bulky in anyway, yet fits snug in your hand for easy operating. "I can`t wait!" I highly recommend this little beauty. This radio can be computer programed too. More info on this dual band HT can be found at:-
