Hey all, just wanted to post in advance that I will be doing a ham radio demo for my chemistry class at Murray County High School in Chatsworth, GA on Wednesday, May 17th.
It will be some time between 12 - 1:30 PM Eastern (1600-1730Z ), depending on set up and how much I yap about why this isn't CB and how it's different from a cell phone.
I'm going to run for as long as I can, depending on how propagation wants to act that day. Frequencies and bands aren't a definite as of the moment, but if I can get enough replies here confirming that someone will be listening, I will make a CQ call on a designated frequency or two. And yes, I will be looking for spontaneous contacts of course.

If I remember, I'll give a listen on a 20 meter frequency. Which is??? Assign one, and I'll listen around that.

I think 20m would be the best choice for most. Pick some frequency above 14225 and announce it and some of us will try to be available.
Good luck with your presentation.

Ditto here - I should be around that time.
And suggestion. There's no need to explain what it isnt, explain what it is. But you can mention it isnt CB.

I've done it before. The part of the country I live in, everything is either a scanner or a CB... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Oh, I thought you were in GA, not SC, Bwaaa Haaa Haaaaa….. that’s my scheduled day off Patrick, count me in……. keep this thread bumped up as the 17th gets closer, or PM me and I will be there. As we are not very far apart, I will not be a spectacular contact for you, but I will be on my best behavior for a change! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

It just so happens I'll be on vacation all next week, hanging out at the beach with nothing to do and plan to be operating portable. Post a frequency you'll be parked on or about and I'll try and listen for you.

14.265 MHz looks like a possibility. I will try as many bands as I can between 40-10, as I'm only putting up a G5RV Jr. But that one's a definite and it also depends on QRM and in-use frequencies, but I will post more the day of the demo, keep a lookout here on QRZ around starting time.

could be around then as well. I will be on using the Texas A&M university club station and callsign of W5AC. I have a 1.5 KW amp and a 7 element beam so I'll put it right on you. Not spectacular DX but we may make it work.

I appreciate the big response I'm getting for this, it's great to know someone will be listening. YRA, Texas would be a great contact, especially since you'll be at Texas A&M, a kind of reference point. Keep the possiblities coming! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Also, at the start of class that day, around 11:50 EDT (1550Z), I'm going to post when I begin setup. Keep a lookout for that post on this thread. After I finish setup, I'm going to listen around and post a quiet frequency.

I am at the school and I have my equipment set up. I'm having a hard time finding a completely clear frequency. Anyone have any suggestions? If not, listen for me calling CQ between 14.250 and 14.260

I'm listening around 14.258 but the bands are dead as a doornail here in western Pennsylvania. I did hear you very briefly right around 16:00 talking to a station near Minneapolis but nothing since then...

I heard some one " island portable in Minnesota " ? on 14.255 but did not talk to him, he was busy talking to other stations.
I tried on 14.258 several times around 11;25 cst but heard no replies.

I did manage to work several stations, 20 was way too noisy for a good demo today. I worked several others in the southeastern region on 40, very loud. Thanks for listening everyone, I just took the setup down but I will be doing another demo next period, around 2:00 Eastern or so. Have a listen on 7.210 or 14.258 again. I'll try, not giving up!
