Well every time #there is a weekend contest coming up I start a week early. #
I spend more time with her, take her out to dinner, cook a dinner, do some yard work, you know that romantic crap they really like. #Results - more sex and when I mention there is a contest on Friday or I want to golf all weekend, I get an "Ok Honey, have fun!"
I don't think she has figured it out yet!

I’ll tell ya about Ernie. #We were all kinda geeky kids in high school and all into ham radio. #We would sit around at lunch time in the gym and swap radio lies. #Ernie was different, although a ham he also lettered in football, basketball and baseball in all three years of HS.
Ernie got the babes – the rest of us dated our female counterparts if you know what I mean. #
One night Ernie was dating the high school babe of babes and he expected to score. #The rest of us, perverts that we were, asked Ernie to key his mobile AM rig so we could listen to the progress and maybe get a few pointers. #Ernie agreed. #
That night as we all clustered around the receiver, Ernie was on his date. #He took Miss Beautiful to a movie and then out to the local drive in for burgers and cokes. #Taking their cokes and burgers with them they drove out to a local makeout place that we called Firestone alley (for obvious reasons).
Ernie keyed the mic and we heard a few mumblings and then loud and clear we heard Miss Beautiful say “You don’t expect me to put that dirty thing in my mouth do you?”
Later we found out that she had dropped her burger onto the floorboards and Ernie had gallantly picked it up and dusted it off. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Back in the sixties 2M ops were not what they are today - repeaters were not an option then. Secondly, SSB was just beginning to replace AM as the mode du jour. That's why I said we "asked Ernie to key his mobile AM rig"; in our case the informal county net was on 75 meter AM.

Ok, yes. It did help me. I was probably about 22 years old, had been a ham since 16. A local group of guys liked to get together on six meters AM. This was early 1962 before repeaters, and not much SSB either.
There was this young kid, too young to drive, I think he was about 12, maybe 13, and he was a ham, a Technician (which was very different from today's Technician.) His father was a well off local dentist. I used to chat with him a couple of evenings a week. One night he told me his friend a gal named Becky, was there. Thinking he meant a 12 year old gal, I said I would let him go, and I started to sign. But he said she wants to say hello. Well, OK, why not. She did. Well, "Friend" wasn't exactly the right word. She was 19, and she was there to sort of care-take (babysit is such a bad word around a 12 year old) while the parents were out somewhere. She was a dental assistant for the father. The kid put her on the radio. We talked possibly three or four minutes.
But I worked nights, and I had to head 'em out. So I said goodnight. Becky sounded neat. The kid knew where I worked. On my way to work, around 11 pm, a car came up behind me and stayed close. I was a bit angry, so I pulled over, ready for a confrontation. But instead of some guy, it was a really neat gal. She said "Hi, I'm Becky."
We dated for around a year.
But not too long before Becky and I parted, I was friends with a ham who was several years old than I. He had a daughter. While at his house, looking at his shack, the shack was not the only thing I was admiring! So I asked the daughter out on a date. Old Bill told me that would be great. I had a Heath Sixer in the car, I think. So Marianne and I went out and I let her talk to her father from the car while we rode down toward the beach.
That didn't really please Becky a whole lot. She and Marianne had a couple of discussions, and I wound up marrying Pam.
But Pam's brother was my best ham buddy! Had known him a long time, but didn't know he had a sister! So as I was dating Pam, I had also upgraded to a Lafayette HE-45B AM six meter rig. And Pam's brother had one, too. So we began things like going to the beach in two cars, Pam and I in one, and the brother and his wife in the other, and chatting back and forth on the radio the entire trip!
Looking back, maybe none of it was a good thing after all.

I met my wife at a repeater club picnic in 1976 (remember the bicentennial?). She was living with her sister and brother-in-law at the time who were both members. She wasn't into radio stuff and was just along for something to do.
We had a small "clique" in that club that would get together once a month or so for a party (where the libations flowed freely). This went on for about two years and my wife eventually got her Novice ticket which was never used and expired without upgrade two years later. [Note to KWW: She passed the code test.]
Three of the couples in that group got divorced, though I don't think the ham stuff had anything to do with it. My wife's sister was one of them; she married another guy in the group, but passed away in 1985.
The same "clique" was also the core of another ham group, the Colorado Contest Conspiracy, which existed only to put up a good score in the Field Day results. (We kicked ass!). Took second in the nation in 2A in 1974. I'm 99% certain we were the first group in the country to use computerized logging and dupe-checking during Field Day.
Those were some seriously fun times. It was only later that I found out that meeting my wife was a setup.
Got married, went to work -- the start of Old Fartitude.
