I tuned around their recommended HF frequencies, but didn't hear anything. Did anyone else have any luck?

Didn't participate that last time, but it's usually a good idea to spin around anywhere between 14.228 and 14.300 to find Kid's Day participants, not just on the recommended frequency.

Doh! Forgot about it. I did participate in the KI3DS Kid's Roundup Contest. Got second place; lost to some guy who used all echolink.

ARRL Kid's Day is coming up Saturday. I am going to be on the air (somewhere) calling "CQ Kids Day". Listen for my station and I will listen for the other youth.

I spent most of the afternoon spinning thru 20 meters specifically looking for Kids Day participants.
Only found one, Alex in Minnesota. He is 9 years old. I plan to send a card to him just to confirm the QSO and maybe help spark a bit of interest in AR.
He did a GREAT job making contacts from what I heard.

I sure wish I could have found more !

Sorry to intrude into the Youth forums.

Yeah, the bands were very poor and I only worked a couple of stations myself. Hopefully the January Kid's Day will be better. Of course I am no longer a "kid" as today is my 18th birthday, I plan to still continue to be active promoting amateur radio to those younger than me. I guess I can still call myself a youth ham for a few more years.

Also the 19th celebrates 5 years of amateur radio for me, so time to get some more young guys on the air!

Hey Steve, Happy Birthday. Yeah, I didn't operate Kid's Day. Don't force it too much on the getting other kids involved, though, I mean, in my opinion there's a lot better stuff a kid could do then use ham radio. Kid's already have video games and computers and tv's and everything, the last thing they need is another sit down hobby. If we should be encouraging anything, it should be getting active in physical activities, and meeting good friends face to face. Know what I mean, Vern?

Thank you for the birthday wishes. While I respect your opinion that there are already a lot of things for kids to get involved in, ham radio is yet another thing. No one forces the kids, clubs set up at public places and kids stop by and operate, dads and moms invite their kids to their shacks. It is just a day for the kids to get on the air, and if they get interested in radio that is great.

As far as kids getting out, there is also ARDF, seems very popular, and it requires getting out of the house. Also there are a lot more things in ham radio than just chatting with guys on 2 meter repeaters or even just chatting on HF. There is something for almost everyone and so Kid's Day is just the exposure to the youth and then we go from there. If they get interested, who knows what they will find that they enjoy. If they don't get interested, well then I certainly wouldn't force them. But I don't see how it hurts to hold something like Kid's Day.

No, I wasn't meaning that Kid's Day was a problem. I was just meaning I hate to see any young people turn out to be like a lot of the overweight smelling nearsighted hams we have over here. If it meant keeping them off ham radio to prevent that, I'd say keep em off. I'm meaning that ham radio isn't completely harmless like a lot of people say. But as long as it's in moderation, that's cool.
