This is one ring tone that should be kept. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Cingular Wireless LLC pulled a ringtone from its Web site Tuesday after learning that it carried a message the company called "blatantly offensive."

Stupid. I haven't owned a cellphone since 99. and that was 3 months. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif A motorola flip 800MHz I could hear it on the scanner. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
If I was to ever get a cellphone again (hopefully never) it will have this ring tone.

Dude, a lot has changed since you last owned a cell phone. You may be able to hear CDMA and GSM on a scanner, but good luck deciphering it.
It's called digital

I think offensive ringtones should get the boot. If there are any that diss rednecks, blondes, or hillbillys we should boycott Cingular.
My Cingular ring is my callsign in CW...

Ok Eric (KE7EDW), how did you get your ring tone to be your call sign in CW?
Please tell us how you were able to download it to your phone without Cingular cutting you off?
What type of file did you create? A .WAV .MP3 what?

I don't have a cellphone, I can not IMAGINE wanting to talk on the phone when I am away from one.
No one will die, no one will be sad, nothing will cease to exist, nothing bad will happen, if I am out of reach for a little while every day.

There are still a few analog phones on 800 but not nearly as many. I can RX 2 or 3 towers here so sometimes they come in.

Who's to say what is offensive and what isn't? As far as I am concerned, anything that offends illegal immigrants is quite acceptable in my book! If they don't like to be offended, then they can go back where they came from!!
To quote Ronnie James Dio (lead singer of Dio and Black Sabbath after Ozzie left), "What right do you have to NOT be offended?"
I think he had a valid point. Where in the constitution does it state that we have to walk around on eggshells in fear of offending somebody?

It doesn't.
However, in a court of law, if someone pursued it, it could say much. And even if it doesn't, it could hurt the reputation of the company. It could also cost them some money, which speaks much louder than the constitution to many unfortunately, nowadays.
I'm sure thats what they looked at when they decided it would just be much easier to pull it.
Not that its right, but thats why they did it, I'm sure.
Yep, the almighty greenback is the difinitive force in the world. Sad, but true.

They are a private business and can ban whatever they want. No constitutional issues here.
Cell phones are useful to have. Good for that quick call when you are running late, trying to find someone, car is stuck in the snow, or cannot remember what you were supposed to pick up at the store.

I had a cellphone 15 years ago when it WAS a new technology, but I find no real need for one now. My XYL and oldest daughter go through cell phones like popcorn. Personally, I don't like to be on the end of that plastic leash.

in the 70 s they played CAR TAG looking for car tags from different USA states
now they play a multi-varied game with cell phone usage in other cars --
see cars with driver using phone / passenger using phone
see cars with no cell phone up to any ones ear
see 18 wheelers with drivers using / not using cell phone
bonus points for seeing another vehicle with driver using cell phone, driving , and eating or reading newspaper while MOVING down the road ( no points if stopped at red light ).
Also bonus points if vehicle has an amateur radio tag on it.

Many years ago now I bought a used Tracfone cell phone. It was not a digital model. I got it so my wife could call when she had car trouble.
She hated the thing.
When she really did need to use it, it would never work. No signal.
Now there seems to be a cell phone tower every few miles. She has a newer {about a year old} Motorola ‘flip’ Tracfone.
She still hates it.
Seems that every time she really needs it, it is dead. Can’t seem to get her to charge the thing when it needs it.
I bought myself a new one last spring. It is a Nokia it has some ring tones that came with it but I haven’t bothered to pay for anything special. I use it to text my daughter a lot. We rarely actually ‘talk’ to each other on it. It has some nifty features like a really bright LED flashlight. Many times it is the only flashlight {that will work} that I can find.
Since I have dial up internet here it is handy for my family members to be able to call my cell and tell me to get off line and answer the phone. My ISP gave me a deal on long-distance service along with the internet service.
Back when all my daughters friends were getting cell phones she wanted me to do like her friends folks and just buy her one and then pay for the service. I told her that if she really had to have one like the others she could get it herself.
She did.
I was very proud of her for doing that. It meant she had to get a job to be able to support the thing. Yes it was a Tracfone too. There were only a few times I had to buy a card with ‘units’ on it so she wouldn’t lose her number.
Now that she and her friends have graduated they all have phones on a ‘plan’ none of them have Tracfones anymore. Also they are finding out how hard it is to pay for the service. Mommy and Daddy aren’t paying it anymore.
My daughter wants me to ditch the Tracfones my wife and I have and get some from the same outfit she is hooked up with. If we all three go together it would be cheaper for us all. No charge for other incoming calls on the system. Free nights and weekends. All kinds of good stuff these days.
Way back when I was a professionalbigtimeovertheroadtruckdrivingman I had one of those bag cell phones. I thought it would be a real money saver. The company said they would pay for all the business calls I made. Unfortunately everybody and their lefthanded uncle Bill had their own cell companies back then. May still have. It could cost up to $50.00 just to connect to their service, especially when I would get east of Ohio for some reason.
The company wouldn’t pay that so I quit the thing once the two year contract was up.
There was no such thing as free long distance and it seemed that I was roaming everywhere I went.

The alternative is to save it to your computer and use a USB port to add it to your cellphone. With some phones you can have ringtones for each memory settings. I have a Morse ringtone for KC2PIC and another for my home.

It's getting more common these days for a cell phone to be your only phone. My daughter and son-in-law don't even have a "wired" phone.
There are places like China that never did build a real twisted-pair infrastructure for the masses. Today, it's much easier to put up cell towers than miles and miles of wire. The average phone user there today has never used a telephone that had a cord.
73, Rob
I went a few years without a land-line. It was about the same price to have just the cell phone. Now it's probably cheaper.
I have both now. Have the cheapest cell plan because I hardly use it.
kg4kww
05-12-2006, 03:21 PM
I have both and I like the security of a land line, Because, someone with a digital scanner and a little know how (NSA) can mod it to listen into Cell Calls, where it's a little harder to do via land line.

I carry one at the XYL's request. Half the time it goes dead on me and I don't even notice. I keep a cord in the car in case for some reason I ever did need it in an emergency, because it would probably be dead.
The thing comes off the moment I come in the door and gets turned off.
The home phone rings now and I don't even flinch. Especially on the weekends. Unless I'm expecting a call, I totally ignore it usually.
My ham friends know that if they want to reach me, they are more likely to get me on the repeater. I don't take the phone outside because I dropped it once and about returned it to nature. My HTX-202 had been dropped a few times and hasn't even flinched http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I do have ringtones. Well, one. The mission impossible theme for my boss and my work number. When I hear that, I know to not answer it, especially if I'm not at work. Otherwise its just the standard annoying ring for me.
I would like to dump the home landline, but the xyl insists on having it, so right now we can't go entirely uncorded yet. I wouldn't mind saving that money though. I pay for these minutes in my plan that I never use. Oh well. Pretty good racket they got going.

The folly of relying on technology was shown up here in London last July when we were bombed. The cell phone system crashed due to the unexpectedly high demand & people had to go back to landlines. I did hear a rumour that, while the emergency was on, the system was configured so that only the emergency services could use it!
