That's a StepIR, isn't it?
Live in the sticks here, too, so couldn't watch. Did they ever talk to that enterprising ham?
Sure is amazing that folks nowadays think they have the right to dictate what they see on your property. Pretty soon we'll get to the point where they tell you what kind of deoderant and/or aftershave to wear, how your hair should be cut/styled and order diction lessons if your accent displeases them.
America - the land of the offended.
dce,
nice post!
I wonder if there are specific CC&Rs in that particular subdivision that expressly prohibit antennas, or if they exist that they worded poorly enough that the ham was really able to trump them. Maybe he is breaking some new ground for those who run into the problem of CC&Rs aimed at antenna installations.

the beam isnt ugly, its the most beutiful structure ive ever seen!!
only the womens lets complain association have a problem, the guy said it was protected by the fcc because he cannot be arsed persuing the case.

I do find it interesting that the only people on camera complaining are a bunch of old women. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
How can people live with dial-up? I am at school right now, and the internet at my house is faster than the net here (while we have a lot more bandwith, obviously there are a lot more people on the net). I couldn't imagine being on dial-up.
But I digress, I don't feel that the city has a right to tell anyhow what they can have in their yard and what they can't, same goes for these housing developments. However, they do, and therefore you won't find me living in an area like that. The dude's antenna was no eye sore for me, and I don't see how it is that big of a deal for anyone. Of course, being a ham, liking big antennas, I am biased.

The women were real bow-wows, the tower and antenna looked just fine.
The guy at the beginning gave some really bad info.
Ham's aren't protected against CC&R's or onerous HOA rules. We do have limited protection with PRB-1 but the local government only has to "reasonably accomodate" (whatever that means) towers and antennas.
I want a CC&R that bans old ladies from complaining.

That's what I was saying.........somehow he got these people believing his antenna is protected by FCC regulations relating to amateur radio.
Must have done some mighty fancy talkin'!

Those neighbors are ugly, unsightly, and otherwise delterious to the ambiance of the neighborhood.
They don't belong there.

You got that right. Now if I could find a way to make that work for me and get the housing people here to let me put an antenna on the top of this six story apartment building I would have it made. Yea I know not in my life time.

Those aren't chicks, those are old hens.

That would mean those old hens are even older now and probably uglier too.

Back in the 70's Amarillo, TX modeled a tower rule from the one in Lubbock and Abilene. I doubt it, but the one in Lubbock might have changed. So the city ordinance in Lubbock says that a guy can go up, as I recall, about 60 ft.
That being the case, with the ordinance and FCC PRB-1 maybe everything was constured in his favor. That ordinance was passed following a tornado that destroyed a lot of downtown and the Northeast side of town and the community had limited communications to the outside world. So the city commission, wisely I must say, passed the ordinance to allow towers in the town.
Those women you saw are all the first generation of baby boomers. Light a cigarette around them and they will faint from fear, anything they deem ugly hasn't a chance and they run the world.

You know what?
This just proves that we as a community need to educate the public more about what ham radio does for THEM in times of disaster.
I can pretty much guarantee that the women in the video would not be griping and complaining so much if they knew what hams do for them whenever mother nature strikes.
It also looked to me like the news reporters disapproved of the antenna as well, judging by their seemingly indifferent attitude as to what that ham had done during the Asian tsunami. Not one word was said about hams helping out in emergencies or when normal communications fail.
Let this be a wake up call to us to educate the public about what we can and already do for them whenever the power goes out.

Well, I for one think the antenna is ugly. Because of that, I do not have multi-element beams, 50 foot towers, etc. in my yard. I live with stealthy antennas and their limitations, but still have a great time with this hobby. And I am very involved with the ARRL ARES groups in my area. I participate in HF nets, etc. I have talked around the world on my lowely stealth antennas.
I think we should not lower ourselves to the level, or below, of those complaining.

Actually, I thought the reporter did a decent job of mentioning the Hams' involvement with EM comms.
The antenna is out of place in that enviornment, but, so are mine, and most hams who have antennas for HF in the city.
I live in an older part of this town and I have a HUGE city lot, about 500' long, so I never encountered any real aggrivation, I also cut a low profile overall, and try to be very friendly with my neighbors.
This area seemed to have rather CLOSE, expensive, upscale homes, My personal opinion is he should have looked for a more antenna friendly spot to begin with.
However, that being said, a REAL argument could be made for removal of the old bags who were bitching.

I wonder if they also whine about the cell phone and cable towers which seem to plant themselves in the middle of beautiful scenery?
