Great evening,
Just figured I’d drop a line before I sign off. As has been pointed out, I’m just a wet blanket on this site. Always have, always will be I guess. Now that I’m completely out amateur radio I don’t belong here at all. But I’ve got to say a few things before I go.
Never let the radio get in the way of the time you spend with your family. (I sure wish I had followed this rule more). Never let it find a place in your life above sweeping the floor and taking out the trash. (Again, very important.) Chores are way more important than ham radio time. Way more important. Always keep it in the place of a hobby. This whole thing about it being a service and educational had me fooled for so long……………………………… I held a false importance for it in my life. I know, I was really gullible, but everyone told me the same thing. And also, don’t worry about impressing people too much. All this about hams being super-human is really hilarity at its finest. There are a lot of great people on there, but as to being any better than your average person, that is doubtful. After all, I’m a ham myself.
So anyway, I’m going to sign out here. It’s good to have that off my chest. The hobby has the potential to be something great for you. Just keep your priorities of God and family first, WAY FIRST, and you should do fine.
Have an awesome life.
Timothy

Those should come before anything:

God
Family
Job
Hobby

I put my hobbies as fourth. If your tretired and have no job or family and your and athiest then prehaps ham radio is 'all there is' Not so with younger guys like me http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Whatever happened to the saying "Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater"?

Why exactly are you tossing this hobby out?

What else are you purging yourself from?

Take a really deep breath and relax. Sounds to me like you are going through a major crisis.

Best wishes. Hope things improve.

I tend to obsess over various aspects of the hobby. I love QRP! What a blast! I also love 20m PSK. But, my primary thing I really enjoy with ham radio-
Pagers!!! I love pagers! I am almost done with setting up a UHF ham radio severe weather alert text paging system. I've got a box of 50 Motorola 450 MHz pagers. I've also got a pager with no service, but it gets weather updates. I think pagers are about the coolest little gadgets. I honestly don't think anyone could ever get bored with the hobby, if they are into ham radio. There are so many different aspects of it. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

So how does a /\/\otorola minitor III rank in the pager world? It's my FD issued one. (154.355) It's works but thats about all I know about it.

I don't mess around with two tone. I like digital paging. Minitor III is a nice pager, though, in my opinion. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

As my father once told me, "There are only two things in your life that you should take seriously- your marriage and your career, in that order." Ham radio falls in the "other" category, just like any other hobby, so don't let it get in the way of your priorities.

All that aside, marriage and job can't take up ALL of your time. Have fun!

Hey, I'm back. Never said I was leaving, just said I was signing off. HA! So now I know everyone's true colors. Bwahahahah. Just kidding. Naw, I was bored so I figured I check out what was new.
AB8MA, thanks for the friendly posts there. I didn't have a big crisis, though I think I was a little depressed when I wrote it. Wait a second, I don't get depressed. It must have been something else. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
I probably won't be posting too much, but you know, it's kind of a cool forum.

Yeah, that's true. But then again, cell phones make it possible for them to keep in touch with whoever they want to, and only whoever they want to. That's the reason they use a cell phone. Besides, there are so many sickos out there on the internet, that meet people without actually being seen, they probably figure there're the same people on the radio. Actually, there probably are........

I've got a better idea -- don't tell a girl you're in ham radio, but if you do, don't use it around her. HAW!

Well once me and my lady friend (go ahead look me up here on qrz for a pic) were in Chattanooga, TN after watching a movie together and she had the craving for some ice cream and really wanted Baskin Robins (I give in to anything) so I jumped on the Chattanooga repeater and a guy helped me find the Baskin Robins, no problem! She thought it was very handy in that case lol...

next time i get a girlfriend (in the far...far...far...future)
hide the radio's, take down the qsl cards and hide the licence and that piece of paper that says MORSE TESTS AND PRACTICE FREQUENCIES in big bold fat black letters http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

btw the learning morse thingy is going a bit

Who says girls don't like the radio?! I absolutely love it!

Okay, here's my humble opinion. You don't belong with her if she can't accept you...ALL OF YOU...for who you are. If that includes being a Ham. Then, well, what do you think?

I don't think a relationship works if one person wants all the attention and can't accept the other for who they are. In this situation, I feel she is the one being controlling and over bearing. Then again, I do not know the entire story-nor do I know the woman. But if I did, let me tell you something. I would talk some sense into her!!!

Hmph.

Girls don't like the radio....grr....

I couldn't agree more. If he/she can't accept that your hobbies, then they have no business being with you. Honestly, it would be silly for anyone to not be with someone based on the fact that they are in a hobby or not. HOWEVER, at the same time, if you don't have much more in common then unless you share something you are just out of luck. For instance, amateur radio is a lifestyle for me, I spend a lot of time with radios and computers, and so it would be difficult to carry on a long term relationship with someone is isn't involved in either one of those things.

Well, I don't think I'll ever meet a girl who likes dirt bikes, chainsaws, computers, ham radios, four wheelers, and '80s hair metal. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

It's about time I met other young hams like me who weren't "appaled" or "disgusted" with metal.

Most of the young hams I've met on the air take after all the old boring farts that are like:

" Well HI HI on the fine business there skip on the prostate exam, HI HI"

God I hate "HI HI" or even the term "We are Destinated"

WTF??

Destinated isn't even a word.

egh....

Well, Ray, I may be guilty of using "hihi" on the air and saying "Fine Business" on the air; however, I do like metal. I am very eclectic and listen to music from all eras.

Was in QSO the other day with KC8WSF, a 14 year old general class op from Michigan. Sadly conditions were kind of poor as he was in and out (two guys trying to talk to eachother with small antennas and little 100watt rice boxes doesn't always work too well). However, I did catch a lot of stuff and it was a nice QSO. He happened to also be very eclectic and we got into a short QSO about music, certainly something I hope to continue with him or any others on the air in the future.

It was used on CW kind of like on the net it is common to use "lol" for laughing. Over time people have brough the CW Q-signals and "hi hi" to phone. As I started on the local 2 meter repeaters I heard "hi hi" used a lot in my early days of radio. So I picked up on it. I try to avoid it, but sometimes it slips out.. bad habit.
