I just recently passed the technician class exam and am looking to purchase an HT. The YAESU VX-170 caught my eye with:
<ul>1000 memories
5 watts RF Output
It's compact design
Submersible
Enhanced paging and code squelch
VOIP Internet linking and more![/list]
Any how, it apears to be a reliable radio with some good features. Could someone give me some insight on this product?
Your input will be greatly appreciated!

I bought one about a month ago. I think its great. Not too big, has a good look to it and pretty darn rugged. Two thumbs up from me!

There are so many choices in HT's that really make it difficult for a new ham. Radios are no differant than suv's, stereos, etc. when making a dicision to purchase. One thing I didn't mention is price. This plays a huge part, too. I know there are others available that are comparable and will have features similar to the vx-170.
In general, reading about this product there's mostly positive feedback from satisfied users.

I currently own a VX-170.
As a correction to be noted, it does not support 1000 memory chnanels, that was an error on Yaesu's behalf. It is actually 200, but even then I cannot fill that up. It is a great radio, although I had expected more heft and louder, more 'fuller' audio from it. There is no comparison with it to my Motorola MT2000, but for the price ($149.99 per AES), it was a deal.
4.5/5 on my scale.

I appreciate the input! Every point will be considered. I'll continue researching, though as to not jump in and purchase the first one that "caught my eye".
You're right about the memory. I went to their web site and looked around for some detail. 200 memory channels will be plenty, no boubt. I do like the looks and features: A larger display, bouble battery capacity than the vx-150. A broader receive coverage of 136 to 174 MHz. And allows paging a particular station and only receive calls from that station if desired. Security password feature (I like that one).
Compact size is a factor because I don't want a lengthy radio hanging on my belt. Working around the house with my lengthy hand held phone is bulky and I've knocked it from my side more than I like to.
