This is sad, the crematorium was charging the county by the pound to cremate this guys mother's remains because of her weight and the county didn't want to pay the extra $$$$ for the cremation. Talk about stress on the family not to mention greed on the crematoriums part.
This is sad and shouldn't happen to anyone.
I feel for this man.

Does someone have to make a special big urn, or would a regular one still work?

No, thought NOT. In a cremation all flesh is vaporized and only contents for an urn is bone.

Ok, I give.
How is a question like if a bigger urn is needed for
an almost 500lb woman insensitive?.
String the bast**** up!
How dare they!
Call your congressman/woman and demand something be done about this travesty of justice. We've got to be able to find some part of the constitution which says you shouldn't have to pay to be cremated, or pay more if you way 1/4 the weight of a Volkswagon.
Damn it! I'm going to email Bill O'Reilly and see if we can't get him on this, or maybe Hiraldo.

I guess, if after my post, explaining about what cremations give, bones, which are pulverized for the next of kin, I can't explain it to you any further.

I'm not sure what you're saying here, LEM. So, it's a matter of whether or not she had big bones? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

It's ashes not bones that go into the urn. The oven is so hot that bone matter is destoried too.
0UZR, her cremated remains will fit into a standard size urn.
K4LEM, I find your picture to be in bad tase and very insensitive too!! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

This LINK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cremation#Burning_and_ashes_collection) disagrees with your comment about the bones.
This LINK (http://www.cremate-me.net/ashdisp2.php) does too.
And as far as paying extra, how is it that they shouldn't be charged extra. This woman was in effect three people; the estate should be charge for the cremation of three people.

Once again, trashing those who side with you I see....... typical.
This is a very sad subject indeed and a great shame for the family to have to put up with such nonsense too.

in that case, the crematory should be prepared to show where they charged by weight for anyone and everyone, not just for this lady.

Just an excuse because they couldn't stuff that bulk through the door and had to build a bonfire out back. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

KA8NCR, If you did your reading of the article it states this
"cremated remains are called ashes although a technical term sometimes used is "cremains". The ashes are placed in a container, which can be anything from a simple cardboard box to a fancy urn. An unavoidable consequence of cremation is that a tiny residue of bodily remains is left in the chamber after cremation and mixes with subsequent cremations."
When the urn is returned to the family it's refered to as ashes or cremains of the departed, not their pulverized bones. Got it.
Gees some people children, I tell ya.
Oh and one thing the bremation process has nothing to do with what this ladys family has just gone through. What they have been through is terrible and shouldn't have happened.

This babe has a run in her pantyhose, now why would an article on Creamation ( Article (http://www.cremate-me.net/ashdisp2.php) ) use a babe like this with worn out pantyhose?
http://www.cremate-me.net/images/girllaptop.jpg
Now, that you all I have seen the gross side of what I was trying to avoid you all seeing, but, that some felt the needed to show to try to prove me wrong, when in fact the remains are called ashes.
So, lets get back to the topic.
Was it right for the conty to hold up creamting this lady because of a price increase due to her weight?
Was it right for the cremator to take advantage of the situation and charge a higher rate?
I couldn't find any runs Greg, but did see quite a few nasty ones that I think had shiny legs from lack of bathing that looked a bit like they could have been mistaken for runs. This and the link by VE2NSM seemed to be filled with lasses that were a bit skanky, as in an unemployed prostitute or porno movie star kinda way, weren't they. I didn't check to see the point of origin on these, didn't look actually. I do have about three guesses and I bet I would be right on with one of them, but I'll keep that to myself, would hate to hurt someone's feelings. Sheeewwwww, nasty, like east European type nasty (the ones that bathe once a week whether they need it or not type)! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

There's no real way to answer that. Good arguments can be made on both sides. It seems reasonable for some types of companies to charge more for larger people (airlines for one, buffet restaurants for another), but perhaps they should similarly charge less for smaller people. Presumably they charge an "average" price to cover the majority of people. When extremes in size are encounterd, it seems reasonable to charge extra. There's a much bigger difference in the weight of very large people compared to the average vs the smallest person compared to the average. If a company doesn't charge more for the heavier person, then there is some cost-shifting taking place (other's absorbing the cost) that doesn't seem fair (for example, the healthcare industry where everyone pays nearly an identical premium).
The death of a loved one is generally traumatic to those left behind. To the companies (such as funeral homes) that deal with death, it's a business and to stay in business they have to be more objective.
