View Full Version : QRZ HF NET
I got tired of reading through Bobdrama-orama and following Heath to get water and answer the door and whatnot and stopped reading the HF NET thread when I nodded off and my head hit the Desk.
When and where is the net? If my headache goes away I'll see if I can join in. Thanks.
Exactly.
Frequency, time?

Around 7275 0000Z tonight as well. And KE5FRF may try 20 meters next time.
Maybe next weekend we'll start having a CW net as well - 14125 about 2000Z Saturday and Sunday - April 8 and 9. I've already volunteered to be NCS - can be there most Saturdays and every-other Sunday, just not this weekend.

OK, the information is in my signature is updated to reflect the net 2nite.
The time is set, but the frequency is subject to change depending on band conditions.
As 'CIA pointed out we are going to try 20 meters NEXT TIME, but since I have kind of advertised 2nite as 40 meters, we will leave it there just for 2nite.
(BTW, Melinda, I hope that isn't a vanity call, Central intelligence agency? HIHI! #....***Heath mindful of what he says from now on***)

great idea Melinda, splendid. It will give me an opportunity to use my sloppy fist some more, hihi.
Take the reigns and go for it!!!
Just do like I am doing, post a thread about it, and perhaps go through some "trial runs" to see how much participation you get.
I have yet to get in on a CW net, so I am certainly a greenie at it, so it will be good experience for me.
Until then, I hope everyone will show up this evening, expect a good Friday turnout!

i just got a PM from Fred AA7BQ, the site founder and he gave the blessing for our NET activities. SO...

I am going to write up something for the "NEWS" forum and send it in.

Thanks for all your input guys!
Actually, i am considering holding the net in "musical frequency" format...you know, kinda like musical chairs, hihi.
Anyway, I just submitted a NEWS article after Fred gave me his blessing for the net activities being OK with him.
20 meters is a definate possibility. If I am going to be NCS, though, I can't do it on 75,80 meters, so that is out...well, in the near future anyway, until I rig something up....but even then, any kind of antenna arrangement I have for those bands would be a cloud warmer at best, so I certainly can't be net control.
So, see you this evening, I hope.

It keeps every one else coming HERE to qrz to see where todays net MIGHT be at.
It also helps keep the vfo knob turning, so that if they dont like THIS net, they may find another that they do like...and KE4FRF, you have to remember that --- no net meets every ones needs / qualifications...so no matter what you do / do not do, there will be a couple of folks who want things done differently . I would suggest to those folks " well, go start up your own net , and do it YOUR way " and smile and let it go at that.

As an idea...have more than one net...to allow for folks different schedules in life...also have different bands in use....
also have more than ONE net control ( not just throw it all on ke4frf shoulders ) ...there are endless ideas / options / opportunities for this original idea.
This might help encourage others to become GENERAL class operator or above, also could encourage others to upgrade their antenna systems to work better ( tower / beams / rotor / etc ).
Every one gains with this great idea.

We can't make it that simple, though. We need to make it some sort of game like CLUE. You have to follow at least six leads or so to find out where the next frequency will be.
Like. Tune in to 3890 at 0640Z. You will receive a slow scan image of a radio dial and a frequency. Tune to the frequency indicated on the slow scan image. It will be the frequency of a shortwave broadcast station. If the shortwave station is Spanish, go to QRZ.com for further instructions. If it is English go to the ARRL website, and select the third news item. The seventeenth line in that news item will have a number. Subtract that number from the original frequency indicated in the slow scan transmission, divide by 9.2, and that will be the QRZ net frequency.
Or something like that. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

good net...I left right after I made my little statement ( lightning strike not too far away ), plus FOOD ON THE TABLE means abandon any and all radio / computer gear !!
Every one sounded ok...like I said " turn rf gain down to 12 o clock position and if necessary use the -20 db attenuator. Sure no one puts more than about a 5 on the s - meter, but for my part, the s-meter could be disconnected. If I can HEAR your voice, or copy your cw, THAT ( to me ) is all that matters. I aint interested in hearing a lot of background noise, with every one s- 20 to s - 60 on the s - meter. I like to eliminate all noise possible and if I can still hear you ---good ( and 9 times out of 10 it works ).
No I aint trying to tell any one else how to run their station, that is just how I run mine. Rig is a Icom 746 ( not pro ) with hand mike.
No I aint trying to stir folks up, just letting every one know of easy way to eliminate static crashes and qrn from nearby transmitssions.

Went to 7275, but the noise levels at my location made it very unpleasant. Randy, Melinda and Audie were loud; all the others at or below the noise floor, which was pushing into the red as the net progressed.
I tried every combination of NR, RF gain, ATT, and even NB I could think of. All to no avail. The Noise Gods would not be appeased tonight.

I'm a little dissapointed the news article I sent in to Fred didn't go through. I need to be patient, because it could obviously pop up any time, but I was at any rate a little surprised
It might not be a bad idea for everyone who enjoys these net activities to send FRED an e-mail to say so and promote it and give him a big reason to support it (I know he supports it, because he PMed me and said so, but every little bit helps, being that it is HIS website.

Bill,
I just talked to a big rig mobile (CW) a minute ago and he was talking about a seeing a tornado around Indy. Hope everybody up there is as okay as can be ...
He was tough to copy with all the noise and QRM going on, so don't know too many details, but think he said all they got was some wind and not much else.
Personally, if a tornado touched down anywhere near my QTH, the last thing I'd be doing would be unplugging, saying bye, etc.

Melinda it was about 4 miles east of me, and I am on the far south side of Indy. #About 8 miles as the crow flies from the track. #The tornado was heading east then then curved slightly north. #Not as close as the one from 3-4 years ago ... that one was 3/4 mile east and slightly south. #Been close to ones in Arkansas in the early 80's. #The freight train was really roaring.
I disconnected the coax from the dipoles and it was really snapping inside, so I used a short jumper and took care of that.

Nobody was more surprised than I was about how this thing exploded on the air. #I started calling XV2PS on 14.290 at 00:00Z and persisted for ten or fifteen minutes. #Finally I heard a weak signal that turned out to be Rob (KF0RT) and I got a 57 from Gordo. #We QSYd to 14.303 and look at the check-ins! ! !
Quite frankly, I was stunned by the number of folks that showed up. #I didn't expect squat because I thought everybody was going to meet on 40M.
Since it started as a simple QSO between three guys it never jelled as a net. #Hell, I never expected a net. #More and more people checked in and I didn't handle it as a net but more as a round table. #I had no idea it would turn into such a large group. #Thank goodness, between Gordon and me, we could hear everybody. #Actually, Gordo had the best ears out there. #And to those stations that attempted to check in and were not heard, try again next time. #Band conditions were definitely flakey as the net went into its second (!) full hour.
(I THINK) In the future if we're gonna do this again, to avoid confusion and doubles, the net WILL NEED to be directed by a control station to keep stations in rotation. #Otherwise, the group becomes unwieldy, stations get left out, and folks starting keying the mic too fast to get a word in. #That didn't happen much tonight - everybody had excellent on the air presence. #Conceivably it may take two control stations from diffent geographic locations to keep all ops in rotation. #Like this evening, Gordon and I somewhat shared net control function because we were hearing stations the other guy couldn't hear. #It's not that hard to do but it must be co-ordinated.
Those are my thoughts. #But your thoughts are just as important and you may have very different ideas about how these on the air get togethers should be handled. #Please share them.
Also, 00:00Z is early but at this time of year it may be our (working stiffs) best shot at using 20M propagation. #02:00Z may be more suitable for 40M SSB. #We need some kind of consensus as to what day(s), time(s), and freqs should be attempted. #And it doesn't have to be all that formal. #If folks like the idea of 20M at 01:00Z (or whatever), we can post in here, "Let's have a net on.......Saturday and see what happens." #Or, we can pick a definte time and day on a specific freq and see who shows up.

I would not be offended in the slightest way, either, if someone else picked up the formal NCS "duties" on a regular basis. I had a good time, but my antenna is much more of a compromise with HOA BS that I have to endure, so better equipped stations would be better for the job.

NO,NO,NO....you are missing my point!
The point is that the concept (as I see it) is to get folks on the air, it doesn't matter what frequency, what time, what mode, or what-have-you. I have seen a lot of bickering on QRZ.com, and a lot of it has to do with the anonimoty of it all. I thought that actually getting on the air and excercising our license privelages together might give a whole lot of people the opportunity to breach the barrier that the internet throws up, and realize the people who post here, no matter how crazy you think their opinions, are ordinary decent folks.
SO...this is OUR net. I want it to proceed as OUR net, and I want to kick back and relax and let YOU GUYS hash out the details of how this proceeds, what schedule, freqs, etc. I'm here to voice my input, but we need to do this democraticaly. I have actually been stressing myself out to much putting things out there, so I need you all to help take the reigns and establish this thing. If I try to do it all ,I promise you I will get burnt out, hihi!

Heath,
You are correct, Once we all get to meet on the Air, it seems that then, we "KNOW " one another, and the Bickering tends to cease. I know That I certainly ENJOY working anyone from QRZ. It's like running into a long lost friend. There is something Very special about it.
I was Thrilled to work all the different QRZ members tonight.
I have worked a half dozen or so in the past, but tonight was neat because they were all there in One place. As Danno stated though, We need to get it down so NO ONE gets left out. I tried to do what I could, but I am NOT experienced at being a Net controller or an Informal gathering Controller.
I might just have to send Rob my A3S that is laying in the garage to get him into the thick of it all! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

JUST TO LET YOU ALL KNOW>>>>
My son comes over Saturday and Sunday while my seperation with the XYL plays out. I may get on the air just a tad while he is here, but weekends are for me and him. You can see his picture on my bio, BTW.
So, I can't be NCS for any nets or gatherings this weekend, due to my family responsibilities.
I hope you guys pick it up at least ONE day this weekend and play with it some more. I'll check in Sunday night to see how things went, and all.
CU guys later. Thanks for all the fun.

I don't give a rats rump who runs it, (btw, Heath, Gordon & Danny, you all did great) but this whole concept HAS to continue. It was most interesting to be able to put a voice to a callsign from the internet.
We may disagree about lots of things, but it sure was NOT evident tonight, and I do not believe it will become evident.
Post where and when, 80-60-40-20-17-15-12 or 10, and I'll do my best to be there !

This sounds like fun! Now if I can only find my microphone...
Well, I certainly have an antenna problem, and am working on putting up at least a 20 meter sloping ground plane so I can get something besides a "cloud-burner" up. Tonight, if the clouds clear out, is another public star party scheduled at Antietam Battlefield, so I won't be around, but I am certainly glad that this thing is taking off.
I think it is quite amazing ( but probably predictable ) that a group that is so used to communicating through QRZ.COM, would continue to use it even during the course of the on-the-air net operation. I don't believe that anyone planned it that way, but that it just happened! Where else, but on QRZ.COM ? ! ? !
Well, anyway, it makes me want to get a new antenna up, for 20, for sure, and I am recovering enough strength in my arms now that I hope to do it some day soon.
73, C U on the net sometime! Jim

Jim ( AG3Y ) ,
You had a pretty good signal down here in Alabama . I am using a full wave 80m loop fed with ladderline and run in direct to my 962D tuner . It is only about 30 ft. in the air , so I know about antenna problems . It ain't the best antenna going , but it is an antenna . I had a great signal on 20m from Gordon , and Danny was boomin in from my home state " The Republic of Texas " . I can't wait for the band conditions to improve . We'll really have some fun then . And did I happen to mention how much I enjoyed the get together last night ? What a hoot . Look for me again tonight ! This could become addictive .

OK, yesterday I held the net at 18:00CST, 19:00EST
6:00pm and 7:00pm respectively
this was 00:00 zulu time, yes? OK, I KNOW it was 00:00zulu
OK, so, as you pointed out earlier, in tha AM on Sunday morning, we all "spring forward" one hour, setting our clocks up one hour. So, after setting my clock up one hour, at 19:00CST, by my clock, the same time exactly 24 hours earlier would have been 18:00CST, right? Yes, that is right. So, while what was zulu time yesterday was six hours ahead of CST, on SUNDAY, zulu time will only be FIVE hours ahead of CST....Am I not logically following correctly?

Tonight's net, if there is to be one, should still take place a 7PM EST which is 0000UTC this last time until the clocks "fall back" in autumn; the clock does not change here until after midnight, in any case. Tomorrow's net, if there is one, will take place at 8PM EDT, which will be 0000UTC for those of us on the Right Coast.
If anyone gets confused, your computer should tell you the correct time for your time zone and you can figure accordingly. Winders will update to daylight time automatically (if you set it to do so).
Best thing is for everyone to start monitoring 14303 at 2300 UTC today. That should be safe.

It makes you wonder how they did it before there were computers with qrz web sites to communicate with ?
Now...just what is the FINAL frequency, and how long do you plan to stay there ?

I'm not here to promote CB antannas. BUT the Antron 99 is tunable for other bands i've gotten go matches and qso on 10, 12, 15, 17,20 and yes 40m is tunable but not good erp.
Since we use 11m for family com and friends its good for that too of course (I actually relay alot of communication for on of the local mills when they can't hear the trucks.)
Some hams like the antron 99... other say it's a 'cb antenna' well.... mabe but I was getting an s-9 reading from so-cal tonight... i've gotten s-9 readings from AK at tmes. My best was before ham radio using this antennas and 'freeband'... I had a qso with Jamaica. .. okay illegal then but it did work. Once the bands pick up i should be able to do europe prehaps.. i've heard then in qso just never QSKed them

Again, just the way propagation goes, I guess. Bill, W0LPQ was one of the strongest stations here. Rob, KF0RT was very strong, and AB8MA was also very clear. Gordon was extremely strong.
I never heard Heath, and I only heard bits and pieces of Randy, AI4FP...I could hear Danny, WA5KRP , but he wasn't real strong here. Realistically, I doubt there's ever band conditions that permit coast to coast (which we had tonight) nets to copy all stations. Considering overall conditions, I think we did pretty darn good.
I have a new found urge to get an 80M loop skywire up to hopefully pull in AL2I, VE7NOT, KE5FRF. and K5MEJ. It won't be pretty dangling from the trees that generally line my city lot, but it could turn out to be a decent Plan B.
