The broadcast station QRM is understandable. Now that 'farting duck' we had on Friday was a different matter entirely.

And here's your reminder http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Nets Friday night and Sunday night ...
Hopefully Heath will be able to call the net Friday night and Danny or Gordon (or one of the other big guns out west) will handle the 20 meter "net".
0000 zulu Friday - 7.275 and 14.325.
0000 zulu Sunday night - 14.325
0200 zulu Sunday night - 7.280
I'll miss Friday's nets (getting treated to supper!). I may make the 20 meter net Sunday night while mobile ... hopefully the band will behave.
Well, I think that I made 2 of the QRZ nets. All I have to say is that final exams are killing me here and that I hope to join you guys next week. Please tell me you guys will be on next week!
Oh and what ever happened to the QRZ CW net? Is that still going on?

I worked Bill KB3LIX tonight on 20 meters on 14.202.
I had just fired up an old rig I have been restoring, Worked North Dakota and a staion in Pa, I signed and in Jumped Bill to say Hello. He had a Great S7 to S9 signal on the Old TS-820s. After I finished with Bill, I worked The virgin Islands and two different stations in Guyana. I guess this Old work horse of an 820S is doing OK.
Gee, we didn't even need a set frequency to hook up. Imagine that !!!

I am picking up my 5 yr old son this evening at 5pm, and will have him all weekend, so unfortuantely I will not be able to NET CONTROL this evening on 40 meters. I don't think Melinda will be available either if I remember her correctly that she posted she has a dinner engagement. SO, I am requesting anyone who normally has good copy on the majority of the checkin stations to volunteer to coordinate the NET this evening in lieu of my absence. Thanks folks.

The pleasure was MINE Gordon, always good to hear someone from the Forums on the air.
Especially, without a scheduled meeting.
Goes to prove that "We" don't spend all our time on the computer, and do actually spend time on the air too.
I heard Gary WG7X calling CQ on 20 the other night, did my best to reply, but a WA4 was a whole helluva lot stronger beat me to it.
Maybe next time.
Also heard the op that was using the Texas A&M University station the other night. I don't remember his call, but tried to work him. Turns out he was turning his antenna west to work someone in West Texas, I think.
Next time for him as well.
I really enjoy working the QRZers, hope to see younz all tonight either on 20 or 40.

I would REALLY like to see somebody step up and call the net in my place. No volunteers that I have seen. I suggest if nobody volunteers, either meet up on 20 meters with the other gang if they are there, or somebody take the reigns, even if it is impromptu. At anyrate. In just a little while I'll be off the 'puter, so I won't be able to confirm anyone as NCS. Somebody just take it and post the results here. Thanks

40 meters is unusually quiet here tonight, not too much 'Snake Handling Music' from the broadcast stations.
Heard QSO's on 7.275, 7.279 & 7.284, but no voices or calls I recognized.

My apologies to everyone about Friday, but I had a quite enjoyable weekend with my boy. We spent half the time wrestling on the floor in tickle fights, and went to see the movie, "RV" with Robin Williams. Laughed my first bellywhopping laugh in a long time when Robin Williams started making fun of a group of 13 year old (caucasian) boys withe their hats on sideways and gold chains around their necks playing basketball and talking "jive"...Robin Williams is a master of comedy.
Another thing in the movie that got me tickled his they kept referring to the RV as the "rolling turd"...(I hope I can say turd here...I guess if it flies in a PG movie, it should fly on QRZ http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ) ....Anyway, a little girl in the theatre, couldn't have been 3 years old, yelled at the top of her voice "Rolling turd, mommy, look!"...The entire theatre broke out in laughter.

Again, I apologize for the inconvenience, folks, I really do!
Last Friday, I had my 5 year old son to devote my attention to, so it was a no-go.
Today, my son is "graduating" from preschool, and they are doing a ceremony at the church. It is an inevitability that things like this will pop up and I am not a retiree, so I can't assure my time will always be free.
(This is why, even though I suggested the NET in the first place, I don't feel I am the most qualified to be NCS)
BUT, what the heck, I'll keep doing it whenever I can!
BUT, I sure wish someone would volunteer...even if it is only to "go through the motions" and simply have SOMETHING.
If not, I will certainly do it tommorrow. My son won't be here this weekend.
Thanks for understanding, and someone PLEASE volunteer!

I am taking the test tommorrow at 2 pm. I expect to score 85% or better. Not perfect, but some of the "trivial" rote memorization details bite me. I just can't remember EVERY LITTLE DETAIL of the study guide.

I met Phil Smith at AT&T Bell Labs in 1973 when I interned there.
Very nice guy, and amazingly enough, not a whizbang mathematician, at all. He used to say he crated the "chart" so he could avoid doing calculations all the time.
He's a "SK" now, died about 19 years ago.
Here's some info on Mr. Smith:
"He was a hands on engineer and was not particularly mathematical. When he had a problem to solve and recognized that he needed some special help, he would not hesitate to seek it out. He was highly organized and super meticulous. When he was sure he was right, there was no way to make him back down.
The first edition of this book Electronic Applications of the Smith Chart in Waveguide, Circuit, and Component Analysis, was published by McGraw-Hill in 1969. He also authored an article on the Smith Chart for The Encyclopedia of Electronics published by Reinhold Publishing Company in 1962 and 35 papers on antennas and transmission lines. Phil has 20 U.S. patents in the microwave field including the basic patent on the transmission line matching stub, the Cloverleaf antenna, and the optimum power ratio coaxial transmission line. Phil retired from Bell Labs in 1970.
At its annual symposium in 1975 the MTT presented him with a Special Recognition Microwave Application Award for his invention and application of the Smith Chart.
The Smith Chart was eventually manufactured and sold by at least two companies. When Phil retired from Bell Labs he organized Analog Instruments Company of New Providence, NJ - which initially merchandised simple navigational instruments for light aircraft, but later began supplying his charts and a dozen or more chart-related items. Through 1975 Analog Instruments has sold about 9 million copies to engineers and educators all over the world. The Smith Chart is currently selling at the rate of about a ton per year. The company is still operated by his wife Anita.
Phil Smith passed away on August 29, 1987."

Yeah, the chart is pretty brilliant in that it is a logical way to plot trigonometric data on a one dimensional chart, but I just don't see myself ever needing it.

I was saddened to find out only a few weeks ago that my old home away from home, AT&T Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, is destined for complete destruction -- if it hasn't already been torn down.
Hard to picture a world without those hallowed halls. It was a wonderful, wonderful place and home to a GREAT ham radio club with a good station and an excellent location (hilltop site, highest thing for miles around).

Awe Stevie............I didn't know that was coming. I have to believe you, I, and a few million other youngsters remember Bell Laboratories sending this fine ambassador to our science classrooms in the 50s and 60s:
http://www.usc.edu/academe/faculty/private/photos/gallery/b-dr_frank_baxter2.jpg
I got a lump in my throat looking up the image of Dr. Frank C. Baxter. He brought an amazing dimension to science for us kids, all while NASA and the original astronauts were trying to make their first leap into space. I could be very wrong about this, but I swear I think it was on one of his films that I learned about a device called a "transistor". As a member of the "Communications Club" I ran a bunch of those 16mm films Bell Labs (the Island of the Gods) sent out to our school.
WOW! Great memories.

The transistor came from those very same hallowed halls ~1947. The trio of physicist inventors won the Noble Prize a few years later and tossed the invention over the wall for production. First commercial application I can remember reading about was the Western Electric hearing aid. It wasn't as good as the vacuum tube versions.
I think they got it working better over the years, though.
A great story is the bio of Akio Morita, the founder of SONY, and how he bought the rights to the transistor from W-E for a song, and then created something we all laughed at: The Japanese Transistor Radio. What junk.
I think he got the last laugh in.

That post, and several hundred others from you, exemplifies why I have zero respect for you. #You think it is so cute to belittle our efforts to put together a net and share the camaraderie of amateur radio. #Take the time to look up the definition of "camaraderie" and tell me why you are so compelled to take pot shots at the QRZ.com posters who showed up for tonight's net and the dozen or so in previous weeks.
What twisted part of you enjoys being punitive toward a bunch of hams trying to meet on the air? #Is there something you find weird about several of us adding another dimension to our on-line friendships?
Do you have a clue how petty your snide posts sound? #Do you speak to your wife, children, parents, friends and familes that way? #"HELL NO" you say (I hope you would say)! #Then why do you speak to members of the forum that way? #Why are QRZ.com posters the butt of your derisive cheap shots?
C'mon, big man. Put the puzzle together. What is it about posters in this forum that fuels your enjoyment of cheapening our existence?
It's time Robert. I want to know if you are the loser I think you are or if I have you all wrong. I bet there are many others. Talk to me.

Yeah, some browsers require that you "refresh" in order to see your new spot. I'm not sure why, and I don't know how to fix it. But if you press Ctrl+F5 it should show up.
I assume It's because browsers keep the page in cache, and when you go back to it after adding your info, the browser just loads the old cached version. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif Anyone know the answer or solution?
The page auto-refreshes every 70 seconds, so at most you and others will have to wait 70 seconds before it shows up.

Thanks, Melinda.
Well, a friend of mine loaned me his Bug, an old Vibroplex.
Been playing on the practice oscillator with it.
THAT is ONE INTIMIDATING CONTRAPTION!
Melinda, have you ever tried a Bug? You know, the only performance difference between a bug and a paddle and electronic keyer is that the "Dahs" are manual, and the dits are automatic, but the speed is set with a counterweight. The electronic keyer speed is controlled electronically. Well, dogone it if that bug, by it's nature, can't be slowed down ENOUGH for me, I think the dits come out at about 20 WPM even with the weight at the end closest to the damper.
SO, when I try sending, it sounds like this (exaggerated)...
<span style='font-size:16pt;line-height:100%'>daaaaaaaaaaah</span> dit <span style='font-size:16pt;line-height:100%'>daaaaaaaaaaah</span> dit
<span style='font-size:16pt;line-height:100%'>daaaaaaaaaaah</span> <span style='font-size:16pt;line-height:100%'>daaaaaaaaaaah</span> dit <span style='font-size:16pt;line-height:100%'>daaaaaaaaaaah</span>
I have played with the electronic paddle/keyer before. I like it better and will buy one. Bugs have a definate "kewl" factor because they are all mechanical, but still, for now, they ain't for me.

Heath,
No, I haven't played with a bug (YET). Was going to wait until I was copying comfortably at about 18-20 wpm, since that's about as slow as you can slow a bug down too (without extra modification). Hopefully before too long I'll be getting one.
I've heard you can slow the dits down about as much as you want though.

...noise aint THAT bad here in Alabama on 40 meters...less than 20 meters
around s - 7 on 40 meters and moving from around s-3 to s - 10
on 20 meters s- 9 constant....no variation.
SO I just checked in on 40 meters .
All stations were s - 20 and over
decent conditions ---- good audio from every one

Great job, Heath. Everyone was strong here, I had no problem copying any of the stations.
Nice to hear AI4EP in there...Robert, you sounded great in Texas. I didn't hear you on the second round, but I think you were gone by then - the band didn't seem to change much, so I think you moved on.
I jumped up to 20 meters, but couldn't hear anyone...just band conditions, I guess.

here is my status on the AUBURN / ALABAMA football team situation --
* both teams represent the STATE of Alabama
* men & women from my area go to both colleges for what ever reason
* no need to alienate one over the other
* both have good football teams
so---when ALABAMA plays some other team from another state ( Georgia, Florida, Notre Dame, etc ), I say ROLL TIDE
so ---when AUBURN plays a team from another state ( Southern California, Oklahoma, Nebraska, etc ) I say WAR EAGLE
but...when they play each other I say WAR EAGLE..reason is --auburn has won fewer games ( underdog ), plus fewer fans.

Now I will have to roll this chair away from the computer, over to be near the radio, and talk to you folks on the radio, then roll it back over here near the keyboard...awful lot of work....mebbe that is why the carpet is matted down from the rolling of the chair back and forth, and forth and back, and back and forth, and forth and back, etc.

...decent net.
I copied every one rather well on the old 746 ICOM...turned the ATTENUATOR on, and most all of the background noise disappeared, but I still could hear all of you. No it was not s9+60 db on the s-meter, but I could hear you folks, and that is all that matters. Hey, I could take an old t - shirt and lay over the radio and cover up the digital readout and the s - meter and as long as I can hear some one, to me THAT is all that matters...and I figure it does to every one else who reads this ( both of you ). I dont think the dude in Nashville could hear me very well, but that is all right.
I know you folks heard " MY IDEA " ,but in thinking about it, it may NOT be a good idea, since it does " alienate " some folks...and at this time, it may not be a good idea...so for my part, just let it slide for a year or two.
--- NOW every one is wondering " What was ai4ep s idea...why didnt I listen ? " The idea was to have another net somewhere on the EXTRA portion of 75 meters ( time & frequency not mentioned ), but I dont want to be accused of tearing the qrz group apart, so for my part the idea is dead for at least another year or two. -------------------

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif I totally forgot all about it.
I think I was around the computer sometime around 7 pm but I did not " see " the " net thread " so I never thought of it...but no ones fault but my own...my loss more than any of you folks.
After all these weeks it should be engraved across the front of my thick skull ...but there is too much graffiti up there already.
Oh well, try again next Friday. Looks like you folks had fun, some new folks ( THAT is great ), and welcome to the new folks.
Let me know how I can help ( other than actually running the net ) and I will do what I can )...I just do not do any kind of net no more, since I tried local SKYWARN stuff back in the 1990 s with local yahoo folks keying up and saying " it is raining here "... " the sky is dark "...." is it over yet ? " ..." i am scared "...and other foolishness.
I tried my best, and got treated THAT way...then some of you wonder why I act like I do.

rdn...nothing to be scared of, unless those who did that stuff move to your area.
It is just a plain simple case of Technicians, Generals, Andanced, and Extra class amateur radio operators just being their selves during an emergency net...and even if they are / were not licensed, they as individuals were still just being theirselves, but without an amateur license......
( oops, this part got edited ))
and that is just about it for now.

I have to echo Melinda, Good Luck to all that are participating in Field Day, I'm SURE ready for Saturday to get here. I look forward to Field Day just to have access to a REAL 10-15-20 & 40 RESONANT antenna ! (And the home brew ones too that are in a DECENT location, I live in a hole so deep, we have to pipe in sunlight !)
And, Happy Birthday to Steve OWO !
Good time guys! I REALLY need to do some antenna work. I started out hearing you folks a little, but then everything went down the tubes :-( Antenna work for next weekend is out (because of field day) So maybe I need to skip work and get that antenna up :-)

Last week was very enjoyable.
The Amateurs that checked in were very professional as well as the NC calling the net.
As a matter of fact I think , " Fred" perhaps should donate to the Amateurs that check into this fine net!
Wonder if he would consider per say a

For the amateur that checks in the most at the end of the month http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif . Humm.

that is getting to be pretty bad, when a 12 watt transmitter on a g5rv covered your measily little jamming station up.

Hey Tom. You can't get these guys around here to talk for longer than 30 mins ... much less two hours. Besides, conditions on around those frequencies wouldn't allow it anyway.
I called CQ for a few mins (about 10) and had one guy answer who told me I was 20 over in Michigan even though I had a hard time hearing him. But none of the other QRZers were around.
The broadcast station wasn't around then, but started to rear it's ugly head so I moved on back to the CW portions ... lots of activity out there tonight.

I wish I would have remembered. Just for grins, I took my FT-897D, tuner, headset, jumpers etc and decided to set up HF portable on a hill at the horse farm where my brother-in-law lives/works.
My van was the only power source, so I had to keep the van running as the DC voltage at my cigarette plug was low. Darn thing has decided, it does NOT want to idle properly. I got so PO'ed, I just packed up and left.
Started the setup at 1945, was complete by 2015, including time needed to lenghten the diople legs. So I guess 30 minutes isn't too bad. In an emergency, I know I can get something on the air rather quickly. This was one of those "spur of the moment' endeavours, unlike a traditional Field Day exercise and I did manage 2 DX contacts. Hungary & Bulgaria on 20 meters. I would have liked to try you guys on 40 meters.
