Astatic to Icom 718

Hello, I am a new Ham, well not really as I came back to the ham radio scene after being a Novice in the 60's. Anyway I have a Icom 718 and would like to connect a Astatic D104 to it. I have read some horror stories on another ham site that if its not done correctly, that is connect it to an Icom product, the radio could "smoke" So....I would like to hear from someone who has actually done the conversion.
