I mentioned W6ISQ, Jack Troster, in another post when KF6RDN sounded just like him. Does anyone know if he is still around? He was a GREAT humor writer for QST for decades, back in the day. He'd be in his 80's now.

I worked Jack in the November Sweepstakes in 2000 and 2001, and even though I was on a serious roll, I took a second to joke around with him and tell him how much I enjoyed reading his articles in my massive QST collection. I sent him a QSL and got back a very nice handwritten note, which I keep on my shack wall.

ISQ has always been one of my biggest heros in ham radio because he was so good at reminding us to laugh at ourselves and have FUN with hamming.

Anyone have any news at all about him?

Overoveroveroverover...??

I never knew who WIOU (yes, that's "Dubya Eye Oh You"), Larsen E. Rapp was! Thanks for the tip.

For you Nate Newbies, Larsen E. Rapp used to write very amusing April Fools articles in QST.

Another feature of a bygone era... Long gone, along with QST's sense of humor. Sad....

Back in 1987, I went to ARRL to check out a job as technical editor. (Alas, they couldn't pay me what it cost to live in Connecticut, so I passed up the job). There were still a lot of the old guard there, guys like Laird Campbell, a gentleman and a scholar with a marvelously wry sense of humor. And Paul Pagel, who seemed like his face would shatter if he ever cracked a smile, but nevertheless managed to keep the old flavor of QST alive. Alas, so many of them have retired or passed on, taking that old humor with them. I bet half of them now don't even know what a rettysnitch is!

I feel like calling the current QST "Shack in a Shirt Pocket Gazette and Advertizer."

Remember the W9BRD DX section featuring an annual meeting of the DX Hoggery and Poetry Depreciation Society (DXHPDS)? Always a hit. And of course W6ISQ, WIOU, and the April Fool articles.

I have a pretty big collection of QST's -- Most of the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's... And a number of them before and after those decades. In addition to the technical articles, there was plenty of space for fun. Where is that now?? Is it just a money thing, or is the current staff just not that imaginative?

Sigh....

And they used to have good technical articles every month. Now, those have been moved to a separate publication called QEX, which members have to pay extra for.

Ripoff!

Only reason to pick up a QST these days is the Burghardt Amateur Center girl might be in one of their ads....

Careful now, that girl is the owner's daughter.
