View Full Version : Embarrassment
Today, while on 20 Meters I had just Finished working GP0STH on Guernsey island when I heard a 2 station call him.
Now kkep in mind, I'm here on the West Coast, a long way from Guernsey Island, And the W2 was MUCH closer...
This guy gave his call. The GP0STH station came right back, Gave the 59 signal report and his Name. Then the 2 station says, Wow, you are S9 plus about 20 Over... But what was your Call? Was it SP0STH and what was your name ? GP0STH responds with, My call is GP0STH and my Name is Lee. I'm Located on Guernsey Island
Then the 2 station comes back and asks. Ok Lee, Where are you Located http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif
Now, First of all, if the guy is 20 over 9, You should be able to Copy his call, Then you should be able to get his name.
If you DO NOT know his call, Why would you call him ?
Then, To have his full attention ,at 20 over 9m and still not get his QTH is Unexcusable.
I could not help but think to myself, What an embarrassment to Amateur radio this 2 station was !

I have been on this end and had the same comments .... strange, in the clear, no QRM....! Sigh...!
Makes you wonder .... and it does ... take all kinds.

Yup, if I'm about to pick up a station who is about finished with a previous QSO, I'd at least have the decency to write his/her call, name, location and other valuable info before I even attempted to make the call. #That way I don't have to spend the first three minutes of the QSO looking like an idiot who can't hear squat and writing things down that should've been collected already.
Strong signal but I can't copy your info. Right!
Totally uncalled for.

I loved that Song... It is SOOOO true .
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little Boy Blue and the Man on the Moon
"When you comin' home, Dad?"
"I don't know when, but we'll get together then"
"You know we'll have a good time then"
Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and then said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys"
"See you later, can I have them please?"
I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time"
"You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu"
"But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad"
"It's been sure nice talking to you"
And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
Yeah, my boy was just like me
Don't let the Important stuff pass you by!!

Hi,
# # #It seems like saying S9 +20 is more of just like saying nice to meet you for some people. It is not embarising to Amature radio at all. Sure, you should not tell them they are 20 over 9 is they arnt but it is done out of sheer blindness. Theese people dont disrespect ham radio and they arnt our to be jerks (well, most). It is like the 73s thing. Some say not to say 73s but to say 73. People who say 73s arent bad people. They just do it blindly. My advice, forget it. If you concentrate on the small stuff, where do you get in life?

Behold -- The Devil's Advocate!
While I agree this was not an example of slick operating, there are a number of things that might have caused this muddled attempt at a QSO. Could be the dood was a total Nate Newbie, operating his first rig that didn't fit in his shirt pocket. In the excitement of working one of his first DX stations, he may have missed the details of the transmission.
I remember not being able to think straight when working my first DX. But look at me now -- An example of operating expertise that shines as a beacon for all operators around the globe to emulate.
But I digress.
I have a much bigger beef with people who call out of turn in a pileup -- and a much MUCH bigger beef with DX stations that allow those lids to get away with it by working them. Sounds like your "lid" was a well meaning, but inexperienced, cat just trying to make a QSO. Or maybe he was a little ssslllooowww on the draw. Sounded harmless to me.
But I do understand your frustration and your point of view. If I were there, I might have said, "Wotta goof." But I also know that willful, deliberate lids are still the worst variety.
Happy operating!

Seriously, my gripe is with the alpha hotels that do the "Hi there (station) I worked you last night, but I just wanted to say HI!". Especially from a station on the EAST COAST working a EURO, or a station on the WEST COAST working a a Pacific Island. If you've worked the guy, go away. ESPECIALLY if there's a pileup.

Only exception might be when people say stuff like, "Name is Bill -- Baker Item Love Love." Or, "Name here is Bob -- Broken Old Bottles." I really think we can figure out you are Bill or Bob even if you are Q-2, S-nuthin', and there's a vacuum cleaner running in the next room. During a thunderstorm. On 160 meters. During the Summer.

For a while this afternoon the mini DXpedition to Gurnsey Island sounded downright BORED on 17 meters. He was calling and calling CQ and no takers.
Over the weekend, the pileup for GP0STH on 20 was almost like the pileup for 3Y0X for quite a while.
Probably no takers for the DX because everyone suddenly turned off their rigs and got on QRZ.COM. They misunderstood and thought they were being told to "Go Posteth."

Seems that many of you have not been DXers for very long. #Just because you don't hear a pile-up on an HF frequency does not mean that the guy in another time zone is not at the crest of a pile up. # He might hear the DX station 59+ #when he is in the clear and hearing the pile up he expects that it must be rare DX...so he swings his beam to it and calls...but he never got the DX station's full call sign or handle even though he was closer to the Guernsey Islands by distance, #Yep he was probably not the only one who got into the pile-up. #Just because you don't hear all the stations in the pile there in 7 land doesn't mean that the guy in 2 land is copying the DX on a clear frequency. # There are lots of DXing hams and if avid ones don't go after DX by joining pile-ups they could never make DXCC. #As for myself I gave up being a serious DXer a long time ago...so don't blame me for adding to the QRM.

Heck, I'll use phonetics occasionally on FM - "YTZ" can occasionally sound like "YTC" or "YDC" or "YDZ," and perhaps even all of the above with an I instead of a Y if someone isn't paying attention. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif #And, there actually was a KG6YDZ who used the same repeater I usually use, so "Yankee Tango Zulu" helped clear up that little bit of confusion. #[KG6YDZ has since changed his call - he is now N6AAC.]

You're incredibly strong and perfectly readable, and I think we speak the same language but I didn't get a word you said. That's what "You're five nine" means. And on CW it's" RRR FB OM UR QTH AGAN PSE.
I don't have a problem using phonetics. But only standard ones. ICAO. If the fellow is Lithublobbian, he might have no idea what "WHACKY FIVE HEAVY TOUGH WILLOWS might mean.
However, I use my call sign first. And my license shows that NOT to be Whiskey Five Hotel Tango Whiskey, but W5HTW. Then, if it isn't clear, I'll toss in the standard phonetics, in addition to, but not in lieu of, my legal call sign.
Yes, I have actually used phonetics on CW! After about the fourth time someone gets my call as W5STW, I will actually spell it out as HOTEL TANGO WHISKEY. And that has actually worked. Mostly, instead of that, though, I switch to the straight key and send it at about two words a minute. Either that or I give up and go watch tv.
Once upon a time signal reports were signal reports. Now they are simply "thank you for answering me."

Gordon,
I'm not an active Dxer now, but I once was. I worked 20 Meters with a vertical antenna and later with a beam antenna and a kilowatt. I often heard DX stations that were 59+ but sometimes with QSB. A lot of local lids (NY and NJ) often called on the frequency while the DX station was still identifying, making me unable to copy all the DX station's information (full call sign and handle) . The embarrassment should go to stations who call before a DX station signs "over"...not stations who don't get a 59+ DX station's full ID, when the frequency isn't clear.
w2ilp (ID Leads PTT)...at least it should always from ALL in pile-ups....but that is not how it usually happens.

Sounds like an innocent enough dumbness.
Not mean or deliberate.
Maybe even just an enthusiastic "yer 20 over here!".
And although I seldom work SSB, I too have had trouble with DX stations figuring out the "X" in my call.
What do they think I am saying? "S RAY....F RAY...ELF RAY....??
I also find that "Alpha" is alien, "America" they get, "Whiskey" they get, oh well, just one more reason to stay on CW. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
Thank you,
I am not alone. I thought it was my fault, always trying to speak with a mouth full of.......Guano !

DX Station: "Again?"

Ain't that the truth.
Too funny !
I especially like the ones that DDRRRRRRAAAAAAWWWWW out their call for 5-8 seconds or more. By the time they are done, the DX station has completed 2 QSO's and working on # 3.

Well, I have often found these foreigners cannot speak good english so I tells them to slow down and “give it to me phonetically. #Or sometimes I tells them to qrs on voice side. #In the old day, dx station talk slower and better english.

Gordon, I didn't get any private e-mail from you...or if I did, I sure didn't recognize who it was from and possibly deleted it.
Anyway, feel free to re-send. The e-mail address here on QRZ.com is correct.
Congrats on getting the F-12 up. I don't know if Ben sold the tower, or not. I'm guessing its in the side yard of the new occupants of the house, who are wondering what it is and why it's there...

Gordons right, I have not answered many CQ's when I heard a # 3 call district, figuring they were local to me, only to find out they were actually on the West Coast, down south or in the middle of the country.
Since I run QRP and my wire antenna on the balcony, plus a#steep sloping, west-facing hill, big apartment building QTH = essentially a two element beam pointing west, I work JAs and KL7s all the time but hardly anyone east of Montana. #When I hear a 1,2,3,4, or 5 call I get excited, but invariably it's someone retired in CA, OR, or WA. #Oh well. #I was out-of-district for a couple years until I got my vanity call.

Man that's a real embarrassment to the amateur radio service especially if someone spoke to him just at that moment, or he spilled hot coffee #over his pants, or perhaps there might have been a shot of QRM.
For that sort of crime he should have 40 lashes of RG 56 with the PL 259 left on the end.

Quote[/b] (N6WK @ Mar. 13 2006,19:09)]Now, First of all, if the guy is 20 over 9, You should be able to Copy his call, Then you should be able to get his name.
When I was getting back into HF my code skill was intermittant. I would "get in the zone" and copy perfectly for a while, and then it would just leave me and I would drop whole words in a panic.
Many, many times I gave a great signal report and then just couldn't get a QTH. My worst experiences were when the place name was some really goofy thing that I had never heard of before. I am a little more consistent now, but it took a lot of QSOs to get up to speed.
