Quote[/b] ]March 13, 2006 — - In a remarkable speech over the weekend, Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt recommended that Americans start storing canned tuna and powdered milk under their beds as the prospect of a deadly bird flu outbreak approaches the United States. So what's the message? Food supplies will be impacted or there will be a pandemic of "human" bird flu? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Having food stores is a good idea for many reasons, a disease outbreak is just one of them.
The food supply will be affected if an outbreak disrupts the transportation system. A very real possibility.
If you don't have food and water stored for emergencies, you better do so.
Hurricane
Earthquake
Flood
Pandemic
Katrina was a wake up call.
Powdered Milk? Can you catch Mad Cow disease from Powdered Milk? I think they're running into so many diseases that the safety information is beginning to overload. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Bird flu, Swine flu etc etc. Good to be prepared for a real emergency but if a epic hits the best defense is to tuck your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye.
All the tamaflu and veggies are not going to do you one ounce of good. I am waiting for the sharpies to pick up on this and start flooding the net with a zillion tons of spam about great and wonderous pills they hawk that will protect everybody. I live in Illinois but like our neighbors in MO. say "show me"

I was drawn to the suggestion of "Americans start storing canned tuna and powdered milk under their beds".
I am here to tell you, that sounds risky.
I mean, how many of us have really looked under our beds lately. I know I haven't.
I mean, not lately. The last time I did look, I was traumitized. Yes traumitized.
So, I will keep my powdered milk and canned tuna where I always do.
In the fireproof 1 Tonne safe in the basement.
Thank you. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Personally, I am leaving the powdered milk and canned tuna where I always leave it, in the store. I am not that hungry nor will I get to that point. I have tasted both and it will not happen again. I also am having a hard time thinking the bird flu will ever get that bad. Guess I still remember the panic over the Swine Flu. This may turn out more serious then the Swine Flu did but I doubt it.

Amen on that! ABC News is reporting today that in addition to food people keep a 6 week supply of drinking water and any prescriptions that they might need. The reason - goverment imposed self quarantine. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/unclesam.gif

Will I still need the heavy guage plastic sheeting from the last warning? Is Y2K over yet? Can I come out now before the bird shows up?
It's all a big question of uncertainty. The only time I know for sure what to do is when King George speaks. I do just the opposite immediately......works out perfectly every time.

In Germany some pet cats were found to have died from the bird flu virus. #All Germans have been warned not to permit their pet cats to go outside their homes. #I kid you not.
To be on the safe side we now don't let our pet cat go outside. #We are preparted to feed her canned tuna and powdered milk instead of dead birds.

I hope it takes on here. The neighbor cats put many burn pee holes on my lawn. I'm thinking about borrowing the town cat trap. Once caught I take the unharmed cat to city hall. If the owner wants it back he/she has to bail the damned thing out. I think its $50 maybe more?

If cats are not allowed outside anymore, what will all the chinese resturants do?

Beats the Heck out of canned milk and powdered tuna.
http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Seriously, why tuna and milk since I don't normally consume much of either anyway? #
I keep rations on hand, enought to last at least 3 weeks if something happens tomorrow. #Before the hurricane season starts I'll lay in some more non-perishables to last 6 weeks.
Gotta love them Ramen noodles, 5 or 6 packages for a buck. #That beats the Heck out of paying $5 - $8 for a MRE package. #Damn things have shelf life of 50 years I believe (or is that their half life?). #You can store them anywhere that is dry and away from vermin. #
Boil 2 cups of water, dump in the noodles and the flavor package and in 3 minutes you've got something to fill that big hole behind your solar plexus. #Not haute cuisine to be sure but it's better than trying to consume 200 pounds of thawing meat before it goes bad. #
For variety, I add some chopped green onions, some dehydrated hot pepper flakes, touch of soy, whatever other veggies may be laying around, plus some diced chicken,#pork, beef, shrimp #or even some (ugh) tuna.
To be sure, I wouldn't want to have Ramen 3 times a day but they sure can provide a few handy meals to supplement the more precious rations.

I used to eat those noodles while on backpacking training trips for the dogs. Nice light weight throw in a can of spam and have a packers steak dinner. Wallyworld has them on sale every year before school starts for like 5 cents each. Made the mistake once of letting the dogs eat them and their systems don't handle em well. I almost died from the stench but come to think of it I don't remember many skeeters that night.
The wife and I keep about 6 weeks of food stores here, every thing from home canned meats to veggies. No powdered milk and only a little tuna. If I am gonna die I might as well have a full stomach with food I like.

If you could bottle that and put it in the sporting goods section, Alaskans would pay dearly to spread it on their skin. Come to think of it, mosquito season is only two months away.

I like Ramen noodles too, have a bunch left over from Y2K. Xyl doesn't like them, mo for me. BTW, Ramen is lower slobovidian for "Noodles". Or so I read in the Times.

I can almost understand the powdered milk because a cow could get bit by a skeeter and get infected but from what I understand tuna don’t spend all that much time out of water.
I suppose once they are caught they might get bit.
No, I actually understand that tuna is a good cheap source of protein and it is always a good idea to have a nice big box of powdered milk on hand. I still have two big metal cans of the stuff left over from when they cleaned out the fall out shelter something like 15 years ago.
Hope I never have to try to use that stuff. I think it was packaged shortly before world war one.

Anyone know the symptoms of a bird that died from bird flu? A friend of mine in PA said he found a dead bird in his yard that had blood coming from it's nostrils with no other apparent damage.

"A flea and a fly in a flue were in trouble,
so what could they do?
Said the flea, "let us fly" Said the fly, "let us flee"
So they flew through a flaw in the flue."
