I'm a very new ham (less than 2 weeks), but I've been told by others in my area to comment on my new HT. #I live about 20 miles from a repeater to the east, and about 20 miles from a repeater to the west; kinda what I thought a dead zone would be. #
I have been able to make contact on both repeaters (I bought a Premier AL-800 antenna to improve tx) from the dining room of my home...when I tell my contacts that I'm on an HT, they can't believe it! #My signal comes in loud and clear, with just a little "sizzling bacon" in the background.
Although I'm new to this hobby, I do know good tx/rx when I see it!
Anybody else have any comments?

I was very close to buying the IC-V8, but decided against it because it has no external DC plug for a cigaratte lighter adapter. Secondarily, the NiCD battery was a turnoff; I really prefer a NiMH or a L-IO battery. I've not actually tried one so I can't comment on actual operation.

After using other HT's, I am in love with my V8. Its a super radio, easy to use. You can program memories for out of band freqs, and lock it against tranmission!
And yes, the AA battery pack can be wired with an adapter to plug in the Car. But my Battery last a 8 hour drive.
The V8 had a lot of good reviews on Eham also.

IC-V8 rocks! I can hit repeaters from 25+ miles away with the rubber ducky included! Looking for a new mobile antenna to boost performance.
I got the IC V8 because: Simplicity (easy to program and operate), 5.5 watts out-put, milspec grade construction.
Adding the better Diamond antenna improved the "bad" areas and removed all the crackles when I am in those bad areas.
BUT, the number one reason I got it: while working outdoor public service events the audio on this radio is exceptional.
The price is right, too!

You can get a drypack and load it with NiMh cells. I have 3 v-8's.

I like the promo now in place where you get a free V8® with the purchase of the IC V8. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Sounds good to me, as long as you don't spill it on the V-8 keyboard!!
