My only NASCAR experience is this: #

We were returning from So. Florida one Sunday and had forgot all about it being Daytona 500 weekend. #As we approached Daytona from the south on I-95 temporary lighted signboards warned us of heavy traffic ahead. #

I suddenly realized what was happening but by then it was too late to turn around or head west on an alternate route. #The race had just ended and traffic was spilling onto 95 from all the on ramps and also across the fields and up through the drainage ditches.

All of that traffic entering the highway at one time was bad enough but even with that volume of traffic it seemed that we should be going faster than a 3 - 4 mph crawl and stop pace. #

Then we saw what the real problem was. #The good old boys made sure that they got onto the interstate but then they had a problem. #They obviously had all consumed bellyfuls of beer and were suffering from overly full bladders. #So cars would stop and with the exception of the driver, they would empty out their passengers who would high tail it to the woods about 100 yards away. #Then they would run back and catch up with their vehicle, relieving the driver so that he could take his turn. #

Things did finally speed up a bit, 5 - 7 mph stop and go after the good ol’ boys realized that they weren’t fooling anybody so they just stood by the side of the road and whizzed into the ditch. #

It must have taken us about an hour just to clear the Daytona area. #The average speed for the next 100 miles or so was about 45 mph where I finally exited the highway.

Used to be a NASCAR fan back in the '80s when they'd only have about one or two events a year on TV. Not my thing anymore. I'd rather watch a couple of F1 cars battling it out mid-pack, never even making a pass than to watch cars continually drafting past each other on an oval. Once I started open tracking and rallying my own cars I gained a much better appreciation for aspects of other motorsports events that are sorely lacking in NASCAR. If you're just looking for the thrill of sustained speed and the feel of the power of the cars, then NASCAR is perfect. Many of my friends are still quite big NASCAR fans.

I was watching the race this evening. #In the big wreck that tore up the #2 car, its rear bumper went flying up and over the fence and into the grandstand seating. #Those things are made of fiberglass or plastic, NOT steel, but I'm sure they're still quite heavy. #That assembly was spinning about its longitudinal axis at a tremendous rate. #I have no doubt that it injured several people when it hit.

I'm not accusing NASCAR or NBC of anything illicit here, just stating what I saw. #The track owners spend a lot of money building and maintaining the fences that contain most debris from wrecks, but there is still some risk to the fans who attend the races. #

NBC showed the replay from the camera with the good view of this only once. #The TV network is likey restricted by contract from showing or mentioning such incidents when they occur, but this one looked really scary. #Did anyone else see this or read any other reports about it?

I watched it, and enjoyed it. Good for Jimmy Johnson! He had a great car today, and with his crew chief being gone, that made it even more interesting.
I do enjoy NASCAR, much for the same reason I enjoy baseball. It's not boring if you actually analyze what is going on, but you can also have it on in the background and keep up with it too. Anyway, I did enjoy the race.

brl...why didnt you record the race on your vcr so you could watch folks get hurt over and over and over ( apparently what you like to watch is the wrecks ) at your own leisure ?

Personally I think the commentators & the NBC tv network spent way too much time on Dale Earnhardt Jr and a couple of others ( there were 43 cars at the beginning of the race ). Jr aint THAT special and NO he did not win !!

NASCAR should take those " restrictor plates " off the cars that have them and let those folks really go as fast as they can. If they wreck, they wreck, and if they get out run by other racers, mebbe they should contact their sponsors ( written all over the car ) for more money to WIN a race or two and make THAT company look good.

Keeping every one around 188 - 190 mph aint no real race, just every one moving around for front position like a herd of geese, turtles, or what ever animal you want to throw in...most every one going the same speed, just a few get lucky and barely get ahead of the pack.

Once again, remove the restrictor plates and let the fast cars go fast. The drivers know the risks when they get behind the wheel.

If a chevy wins, a chevy wins...if it is a ford, it is a ford...if it is a toyota, then it is a toyota.

Return the action and thrills of RACING back like in the old days. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'm not into circle-track racing, but the NHRA/IHRA have done the same thing in drag-racing...fuel mixture restrictions and a host of other "handicaps" have conspired to really dull it down.

The difference in speed and ET between the fastest and slowest drivers of a given class is now just a few MPH/tenths. No one is making really spectacular power gains, as were evidenced in the heyday of 'Double-A Dale' and many other stellar tuners...

I am going to call the " restrictor plates " a well - known title with a choice wording at the end ---- " the dumbing down of nascar round trach racing "...put on those restrictor plates so no one runs out ahead of the crowd, so who ever loses wont get beat ( and get their frail ego bruised ) more than a few car lengths.

But I still say " take those restricter plates " off and let those cars run as fast as the drivers want / need to go to WIN the race. === and if your car aint fast enough to stay in the race, just sit on the sidelines and honk your horn !! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

...something similer to the old idea of hunting dogs chasing rabbits by the old farm house ..." if you cant run with the big dogs, sit under porch and bark " http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Are any of the NASCAR folks licensed amateur radio operators ? If so, does any one get confused over their " private channel radios " and accidently give their amateur call sign ?

Also....why dont some of these racing enthuisiasts go into cahoots together and build a 5 - 10 mile racetrack ( of course in a oblong circle ) , with a hotel / motel in the center part, along with a golf course, and who knows what ever else ? Sure it would be a multi billion dollar investment over several years just to build the basics, but it might pay for itself by the time the original owners died ( since we uns are living longer than ever before...if a car wreck or cancer or stuff falling to the ground from pigs flying overhead dont kill us )...who knows ?

{ I dont mind the flock of pigs flying overhead, I just hate using up all the water in the windshield washer container up to clean the windshield after driving under a big flock of those flying pigs when one has a " nature call " } http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Am I the only one who thinks that NASCAR has become a bunch of media whores just like the NFL? Who gives a rat's behind about a concert at the beginning and two hours of pre-race commentary? I just want to watch the race. It wasn't this bad a long time ago. It's why I stopped watching NFL.

It looks like I will have to tune in two hours after it starts when they finally start the race. Also, could NBC have a few more commercials in there? It was just about 50/50 racing and comercials. I think they could do better and have all commercials all the time and just tell you who won at the end.

Nope...

It's like any other popular sport/fad: Commercialize the he!! out of it after adding glitz as a "sell factor".

Want to watch some good circle-track racing? Go to your local speedway. Likewise with football: Check out the high-schoolers. Those kids are still hungry and are playing to win...not for recognition and subsequent hiring by various endorsement agencies...

This was already done - in Japan, by a Formula 1 consortium - and failed miserably.

Formula 1 racing has a bigger worldwide audience than NASCAR does in the U.S. ... so if an autodrome such as the one which was built there floundered before it ever got started, extrapolate how well a similar construct would work here.

It's called Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but it's only 2.5 miles around http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Actually, how about the historic Nurburgring track? What's that, about 26 miles around? I forget...

If you don't like the commercials , do what I do and use your remote . The alternative to commercials would be pay per view to watch racing and or sporting events .

I'll stick with my remote and flip (the channels ....not flip out http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ) between commercials . http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

And if they must have a concert at Daytona, wtf is with having Bon Jovi as the concert stars?? I thought some band like Skynryd or Willie or somebody like that. Heck if you are gonna have a concert for rednecks have a redneck group playing. I won't even begin to express myself on Bon Jovi as a group since the moderators take a dim view of language and thoughts of that type.
