This the latest I can find, it's over a week old but I doubt if things have improved a lot since then.: #Fog lifts for Sago Mine survivor (http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/20060209/ts_usatoday/fogliftsforsagominesurvivor)
Quote[/b] ]Family members and doctors say his progress has been remarkable. When Anna says Randy's name, she says, he turns to her. She feeds him up to three meals a day - he prefers Taco Bell and Wendy's to hospital fare - which he chews and swallows on his own. He scratches his face, sometimes puckers up to kiss his wife and laughs out loud. Anna says he's even managed to say a few words, but she won't say what they are.
Quote[/b] ]Randy McCloy spent more than 42 hours in a mine polluted with carbon monoxide. When he was rescued, he was unresponsive. He suffered kidney, lung, liver and heart damage, according to Russ Biundo, medical director of the rehabilitation center. McCloy was moved there from West Virginia University's Ruby Memorial Hospital two weeks ago.
"Those organs, for the most part, have recuperated. He's an extremely strong young man," Biundo says. "It's a miracle he survived, no doubt about it. I've never seen anything like this, and we deal with brain injuries every day."
Now, Randy is breathing on his own. A tracheotomy tube was removed Tuesday.
"He has improved remarkably," Biundo says. "Still, we have a long way to go."

Poor devil. Living through one nightmare and into another. This is the kind of guy that deserves an All-American Comeback, whole and strong again.

W.Va. Mine Survivor Not Told Others Died (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/M/MINE_SURVIVOR?SITE=FLTAM&SECTION=US)
Quote[/b] ]"He's able to express his needs. He's able to tell you where he has pain. His words are astonishingly well-articulated without any slurring," Biundo said. "He'll say things like, `I feel fine, thank you.' Just like that. As plain as day."

UPDATE:
Randy McCloy has been released from the rehabilitation hospital and has gone home. He did a very 'short & sweet' news conference upon leaving the hospital. He walked to the microphone, with assistance, and thanked everyone for their thoughts and prayers.
He will now be going to therapy for several hours a day, three days a week for at least several months. He has lost about 25 pounds according to his doctors, but looks very good for someone that has gone thru so much. His eyesight is still not back completely, still weak on one side, is still shaky and needs assistance to walk, but is improving daily according to his doctors.
He did an interview for CBS's TODAY show. Supposedly the entire interview is available at www.KDKA.com
I send my best wishes for a continued speedy recovery.

No doubt this good man is going through some enormous emotional swings and has his hands full getting his life put back together. I hope he is makes his way through it all and returns to ham radio soon. I think he will be stunned by the thousands of hams welcoming him back to the air waves.
I wonder if he's ever worked a pile up.

I know lots of you sent cards to Randy and his wife, did anyone mention the fact that he (Randy) was the subject of multiple threads here and how much concern was expressed.
Most hams know of the existance of QRZ from the callsign lookup features, but many do not know about the discussion forums and the many, many other features on this website.
I'm NOT wanting him to get on here and thank everyone, THAT'S NOT THE POINT, but I would like him to know that there are lots of others from around the globe that heard his tale, and expressed concern and best wishes for his speedy and complete recovery.

I'm sure he has seen at least some of the many QSL cards sent to wish him well. #Perhaps it's time for a new round to go out wishing him a good homecoming -- at least from those who have not yet sent a card.
By the way, the road his house is on has officially been renamed Miracle Road by the town of Simpson according to this STORY (http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/03/30/randy.mccloy/index.html) on CNN. #So regardless of the PO Box address listed on his license, send a card to:
