I have to agree with B G when he says Quote[/b] ] the Winter Games. Count me among those who don’t care about them and won’t watch them. In fact, I figure that when Thomas Paine said that “these are the times that try men’s souls,” he must’ve been talking about the start of another Winter Olympics

Strangely enough, I actually was flipping through the channels and happened across Gumbel's little anti-Olympic rant. What a racist jerk.

I have watched all of the Olympics that I could and will suffer a real let down when it is over. There is nothing else on NBC that I normally watch, other than an occasional Seinfeld re-run..

What does he want? Affirmative action in olympic sports? AFAIK, these athletes are chosen by their abilities, not by the color of their skin. Am I wrong? In the summer olympics should we demand more whites? After all, track and field, basketball, etc, are "over represented" by blacks.

This is just silly. Let the best compete, regardless of their skin color. If the ski or snow board teams look white, that's probably because that's who is best.

Maybe ole money bags Bryant would like to pony up the funds necesary to teach some black kids how to ski, skate, snowboard, ski jump, etc....

Naw, he'll just sit back and wait for someone to sue the US Olympic committee demanding affirmative action.

Strange, I thought it was a anti- GOP racist remark. Sounds like a statement you would hear from the NAALCP, National Association for the Advancement of Liberal Colored People. #Don't waste too much of your time looking for the list of great conservative blacks on their web site.

No one can convince me that an Olympic-caliber downhill skier isn't a real athlete. And personally, I find that far more impressive than a bunch of guys running around shooting baskets.

Let me clarify what I mean by saying I won't watch the Olympics. #(Well not too much anyway). #

I think that those athletes are probably the greatest in the world or they obviously wouldn't be there. #If I could just sit down and watch an event without listening to all the sappy commentary and enduring the networks jumping from one event to another, then I would probably enjoy them. #Also watching some of the lower tiered athletes struggling to overcome their difficulties to compete with the big names is part of the show for me - damn I love rooting for the underdog. #

It has also occured to me since I started this thread - just how many winter sports are played in places like Nigeria, Tunisia, Angola, Cameron, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Monzambique, Rwanda, Chad, Uganda, etc? #Well you get the point.

Resign from what? I wasn't aware he had a job right now. Maybe I am just lucky and am not getting whatever show or network that has him on the air. The man never struck me as a real mental heavy weight to start with. His comments and opinions mean about as much to me as Regis or any of the other talk show talking heads. It's just Bryant Gumbel for gawds sake, it's not like we are talking about comments from somebody important here.

If I remember correctly, that particular bobsled team actually made it to the second round even though they were expected to finish dead last.

Yep, I was actually rooting for them as well as Eddie the Eagle on the ski jump.

But my point is there aren't too many skiers, bob sledders, lugers (is that right?) etc. from the African nations. Part of the reason is of course is the climate that most live in and another part is some of those countries are just too damned poor to sponsor Olympic teams to be competitive with the rest of the world.

I like the Winter Olympics. I like to watch skiing, speed skating, bobsleding and hockey. Probably the single greatest sporting event that has happened in my lifetime occured in the Winter Olympics in 1980 with a hockey team. Those athletes train just as hard as the summer ones, and so what if they are predominately white? Did it ever occur to Gumbel that most of the nations in the Winter Olympics are European ones? Granted, there are Oriental nations too, but it's mainly dominated by European sports, with European athletes. If they are white, so what?
And then, to compare it to the Republicans? What's that about? Why is that comment even necessary? Funny; I seem to read from history that more Republicans supported the Civil Rights Act in 64 than did Democrats. Dang! I didn't know that Republicans were a different race. Some of them are clearly of a different species, but not a different race.

The XYL and I have been watching too much of the Olympics. There have been some major letdowns for the U.S.. All of a sudden, the Chinese have emerged as a major power in several big events.

The snowboardcross races were pretty entertaining, but the finish of the ladies final really bummed me out.

Bryant Gumby needs to pull out some stats about the demographics of who even SHOWED UP to try out for the Olympics. If any particular segment of our population showed up, but was turned away en masse, let's talk about it. Otherwise, Gumby, obviously starved for attention, needs to shut his baloney hole and go back to being a 5th-rate "celebrity."

I was pretty pleased to see a black dood from the USA take first place in the speed skating yesterday, especially after one of his teammates got whooped right before him. Bet ya anything he didn't want or NEED Bryant Gumby speaking for HIM. He let the skates do the talkin' -- Not the mouth of some sports wannabe blowhard.
