Hello all, i have been out of the hobby for a few years and i am
looking for a decent 2m/70cm antenna with some gain but it does
not have to be high gain because i don't drive long distances anymore.
Prefer mag mount. i have no idea what would fit this description, i don't
have any ham stores current catalog and it's a pain to compare online.
Again forgive me for asking, just looking for some ideas from folks
that realy use whats out there and can make a few suggestions.

Larsen is the best antenna maker n the land mobile business.
Larsen antennas. (http://www.radialllarsen.com/)
Personally I prefer to buy from Ham Radio Outlet.
HRO's website (http://www.hamradio.com)
Their catalogue is easy to download and view online.
Good luck.

I'll echo what Chris says. You can't go wrong with Larsen and if it's VHF/UHF, they have it -- including mag mounts. This is what many of the police / fire agencies use.
Now, to talk you into using a permanent mount... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Thanks guys, i guess some good things don't end. The last mag mount i bought
was prolly 18 years ago and had no idea what might have changed over the years, i always liked larsens nmo mounts.

I'll probably get a lot of flack for this, but . . .
I recently got an MFG 1729 2 meter/70cm mag mount antenna, for $35.00. It is rated at 2.6 db gain on 2 meter and 6.3 db gain at 70 cm.
It has a very nice, thick plastic cover on the base, so as to not scratch up the paint. It has a good SWR and improves performance much above the old quarter wave 2 meter mag mount I was using. It is extremely flexable but does not bend over in the wind.
It is reasonably small and slim and looks pretty good on my trunk lid.
So far, so good with this antenna.
Check out Hamstop.com. They have their own site plus an ebay store. There are many varieties of dual-band mag mounts. I bought the cheap one (like $16) and use it when I need operate in a vehicle other than my own or as a base station antenna on top of a cookie sheet sitting up on my porch fence. Great performance and you can't beat the price!

Larsen are good antennas.
If your just looking to hit some local repeaters, a Diamond will also do well. Mine is 1/2 wave at 2 meter and 5/8 wave at 70cm on a NMO mag mount. Never had any kind of problems with it and I am on the road quite a bit.
(Darn, I wish this board would except Greek letters like lamda)
Just another antenna for your consideration.
Good luck and welcome back.
