Maybee its just me, but I have noticed for the past week that 40 meters has had s7-s9+ noise levels. I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same problem?

40M has been flaky in south Texas. #Last week I had a 40 minute SSB ragchew with a guy in MS around 02:00Z. #Normally the band is useless for anything but CW at that time of day. #Overall, more often than not the band has an S-7 to S-9 noise floor during the day. #There are times you can watch your S-meter fluctuate between S-1 and 20 over, going up and down like an elevator. #Flaky.

Interesting. I haven't noticed any unusual noise on 40 this week, or last night.

I was on 40m SSB at 0200UTC in a rag chew involving a few stations back east on about 7193, I think. Everybody sounded fine. Oh yes, now I recall the thing that made it interesting is one fellow was in PA, and a 14 year-old who'd been a ham three years already (!), using a "new" TS-120S on 40m SSB. His name was Jonathan, KC3 something or other.

So, that was a 2700 mile QSO at about 0200UTC last night on 40m, no unusual noise noted here in Los Angeles.

Last night a little bit later (0320UTC) I worked 3Y0X on Peter I on 40 CW, and although the band was packed with very strong signals from the pileup, 3Y0X was loud and clear on 7022 or so, no noise noted then, either.

What, exactly, is your antenna?

Agreed, here in central Texas the band has been up and down this past week. The really bad thing is, I installed my first HF mobile installation last weekend and have never heard a HF mobile station, so I had nothing to compare it against.

All week I've been grounding, bonding, listening, and grounding some more. About mid week I wised up and started comparing signals from the mobile with the home station, and finally decided it was the band and not lack-o-grounding-straps.

I worked Lithuania this morning while drinking my coffee in the truck and trying to get both eyes open, so I think I'm content with my install at this point! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I've been in similar situations.

15 metres could be working great mobile. I get home and do a few things I've been meaning to, fire up the gear to test, and - nuthin'. Go through the "oh goodie, what'd I screw up now?" thing only to discover that the band had rolled off the table while I was tinkering.

15 has worked nice for me for DX mobile, and tagging my call with "mobile" or "Cincinnati mobile" in a pileup gets quick results. Getting a report of, "Wow, you're signal's strong for a mobile" when I'm just working 100W into a 9-ft. whip is rather gratifying. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

This evening I had a very brief 40m PSK contact with the VOA station in Bowie, which is just down the road a bit from my location. Yesterday evening, I had a 40m PSK contact with a ham in Spain.

Most of the noise I have encountered has been the result of phone work in the lower portion of the band. Also noted some PacTOR stuff.

Situation seems normal to me.
