Here is my synopsis of Steel Stonehenge, the "prequel" to Plasma Dreams.
Synopsis of Steel Stonehenge
By
Eric P. Nichols
Alice-Margrette Leander is the acknowledged moral compass at Ionoprobe research facility, a sprawling think tank in the remote Alaskan Interior. For several years, the immense circular array of antennas at the center of the facility has been used to direct radio signals toward the Aurora Borealis, so the Ionoprobe scientists can learn more about how the Northern Lights really works. Now, the antenna array is to be modified so as to direct the powerful radio signals downward into the belly of the Earth. Only the enigmatic project manager, Dr. Leroy Wu, knows why.
.For years, Alice-Margrette “A.M.” has listened as her colleagues express their concerns about the possibility of the often-bizarre technology used at Ionoprobe falling into the wrong hands, and perhaps being used for sinister purposes. A.M. feels they are missing the point entirely. The real danger at Ionoprobe isn’t the possible misapplication of the technology at all. In A.M.’s estimation, it is the acquisition of forbidden knowledge itself that will surely lead to their imminent demise.
The fact that the antenna array bears an odd resemblance to Stonehenge does nothing to ease A.M.’s malaise. Will the bizarre structure prove to be a modern-day equivalent to the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil? Is its very form a monument to Man’s arrogance, or is it simply, by sheer coincidence, the most effective way to build a big radio antenna?
As time progresses, A.M. and her colleagues learn that Dr. Wu’s goal is to convert the Earth into a giant particle detector. With his new super-detector, he intends to trap the elusive Magnetic Monopole, commonly referred to in physics circles as the “God Particle.”
A.M. faces a long, strange internal battle. Despite her persistent, vague nausea about the whole idea, she keeps coming up with insights and innovations that contribute immensely to the very success of the project she is beginning to loathe. She wonders if she is evil personified. She fully expects to be struck dead by a bolt of lightning at any moment.
If the project succeeds, it could mean fame and fortune for all.
Or they could all burn in hell.
