There are several of you who know I had my HF Setup for sale in the Sale section of QRZ.com.
I received an email from a "Jim Jones" asking me about the condition, so on and so forth. I answered him politely enough and just now received an email back from him telling me how he liked doing business with legit people like me.
He wants me to take a cashier's check worth over $2500 and cash it for him, take my portion of the sale of the MKIIG out, then wire him the rest of it along with my name, address, every phone number I have and my checking account number.
Who does this guy think I am? A complete and total idiot? I may be an idiot sometimes but I'm not a complete idiot.
Sheesh
Anthony - AE2NY
P.S. Watch for this scam. I just got hit and forwarded the email to Fred.

Seriously, perpetrators of the "Nigerian Scam" are among the lowest of the low, IMHO. #419 Eater.Com chronicles the actions of those who've taken it upon themselves to strike back at the vermin.

I wonder if the Feds might be interested in following up with this attemptted larcency? I know that i would be making some telephone calls if I were to get a proposal like this to see if the FBI or Postal Inspecter would be interested in reverse-stinging this guy. It's an all-too-common scam.

Here's the thing you must remember. These scams are successful often enough to make it worth their while to keep trying.
How sad is THAT?

I'd let him send me a check. If it cleared...I'd have some money AND a radio. If it didn't clear...I'd still have a radio and he'd be guilty of mail fraud.

ECI: And you would be guilty of cashing a fraudulent check. Works both ways.

So if I run down to the corner store and write a bad check for a 6 pack of soda, and the store owner takes it to the bank, he's guilty of a crime?

From some of the reading I have done on these things, YOU would be (and could be) held responsible. #In the case of a business owner (I am not even close to a lawyer) he can prosecute YOU for passing a bad check.
In the case of these scams, yes people do have checks and have them framed ... but not cashed....since they know they are fraudulent.
Best bet, talk to your bank and ask...

Now we know why my wife won't let me have any money...and I always thought it was to keep me from running away from home!

Yeah, but if it cleared and you don't send the radio and the change back, YOU are the bad guy!

I was being facetious.

It is highly unlikely that the check would be valid. It is possible that it does contains a valid bank account number and it might take some time to bounce. For example, if someone wrote a check with your bank account number, you might not be aware of it for a month or longer. It is quite likely your bank would cash the check. I have seen checks clear that were not even signed.
And of course if you deposit a bad check into your checking account, most banks hit you with a returned check fee. $35,00 is not unusual.

I didn't see any for Katrina, but I remember when the three hurricanes hit Fla 2 years ago. There were a number of 'roadside' relief fund stands asking for donations.
I couldn't help but wonder how legit those were....?
