New Atenna technology for Better cell phone service (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10992418/)

What do you think of this idea?

I think it's interesting and maybe could be used for ham reapeaters.

sounds cool but that is north dakota flat as a pancake anyway.

Remids me of a paul harvey news about a cat the cia outfitted with a radio transmitter. optical cameras behind his eyes, auditory sensors in his ear cnals, radio transmiters in hsi back both hf and vhf... and of course the main antenna extending through his tail.. poor cat. Well they sent a van iof agents secretly to moscow to release this cat to spy on a building. he was relieased from the van and walked across the sreet towards the building only to be hit by a car. 1 million dallars of cat-spy equipment gone.

Talk about interference with other cell sites....this is why cell phone use in aircraft is taboo. Crazy idea at best. Saw the idea earlier on my MSN site.

I think it will interfear will Ground cell sites miles away and in other states. Just think of the radio horizon this thing would have.

KWW that is exactly what I said yesterday.

Interference to cell sites from aircraft create a mess.

Stupid idea.

How are the balloons going to remain stationary?

How are they going to get licensed for a "roving transmitter" like this?

How will 911 calls be routed? How will it know which PSAP to send the call to?

How can the balloon hand-off the call to another balloon or site?

How about the balloon wandering into an area with a similar channel assignment?

What a stupid idea.

Sounds like a chapter in Project Blue Book. Weather balloons, yeah, weather balloons.

On the serious (?) side, they'll need an awfully big weather balloon to lift an 1100lb equipment rack.

Balloons only work in comic strips, where they write messages on them. Balloons can be used for antenna raising in good WX conditions only...because of winds...unless they are at very high altitudes above the WX...In that case it is probably just as good to use satellites.

Good Point W2ILP, I think you should suggest it to the powers that be.
