View Full Version : Monday, January 23 (Tommorrow)
Quote[/b] ]Watch out: Monday, January 23 is going to be the unhappiest day of the year, according to a British university researcher.
Prepare for the Gloom... (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060122/od_afp/afplifestylebritain_060122210756;_ylt=AsgQVtyhGza5 6wGMNV9scuSs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3NW1oMDRpBHNlYwM3NTc-)
For those who want to know when the 'happiest' day of the year is, he claims 6/23 (predictable - sort of like the 3/4 wave antenna formula).

Well, it'll be windy here - through Tuesday, they say. Still no snow. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif I've lived here all of my 39+ years; never seen snow falling, not even once, not here or anywhere else. I've seen some hail that looks a bit like snow, though...
Unhappiest day of the year? Whatever. I imagine it'll probably be the same as any other day. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Ford will cut at least 25,000 jobs and close 10 parts and assembly plants, likely including plants in St. Louis; St. Paul, Minn.; and Wixom.
Ford will reduce its North American manufacturing capacity by about 25 percent or by 1 million units.
Salaried layoffs will begin Monday.

You've led a sheltered life!
I've lived in L.A. only 18 years and have seen snow falling dozens of times. Not actually in L.A., of course, but in the mountains not that far away.
I promised the kids that they would get to build a snowman at least one day every winter, even though we live in L.A. And I've held up my end of the deal. We drive to Big Bear, or Snow Summit, or Mt. Pinos, or if we have to, all the way to Mammoth Mountain. Some winters we haven't had to go far at all, and found snow -- and snow falling -- on Mt. Wilson!
Couple years ago we built a snowman on the roof of my car, up in Wrightwood at an elevation of 8000 feet or so, and then raced home to see if we could pull into the driveway with some of the snowman still intact. We almost made it, there was a little bit of snow left on the roof, although it was 75 degrees here and the roof was "all water" within just minutes.
Sping Break of 2003 we spent a few days up at Sequoia National Park, under the big trees. It was April, but at 7500 to 9500 feet there was plenty of snow. I took video of the kids and the XYL making a great snowman, and then making "snow angels" on the ground. And the entrance to the park is only 2-1/2 hours from home!
Great fun, especially if you have kids.
It's never to late to enjoy snow. Just remember to leave it behind when you go home and then not have to deal with it until you drive to the mountains again.

Ugh. There were no degrees outside this morning at all. None. Thermometer read ZERO, so all the degrees were out visiting California or some place. Fortunately I didn't go in the hole, like minus some degrees. Been down to ten below twice this winter already. I'm ready to get some of those 85 degree critters shipped in from the coast.
It did warm up to 54. Wasn't too bad, but I'd much prefer 84.
So, yeah, I'd say it was a pretty bad day. Lots of sun but it sure didn't help things much.

Certainly not a widely-traveled one, at any rate. I have never been further east than Las Vegas [once or twice annually since 1999], further north than Redmond OR. [once, last July], or further south than Tijuana [maybe two or three hours south of the border before heading back home, age 9, February 1976]. West? Well, I've been to the beach, of course - as recently as {thinks} 1982? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Oh, I've seen snow a couple of times - had to go up into the mountains for it, naturally, and as I recall, that was around 1978 [a weekend trip] and 1980 [a school field trip]. I've just never seen it falling. It doesn't happen here. As far as I know, you can't buy a snow shovel at any price in Los Angeles. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
ANYWAY, about this "unhappiest day of the year" hoo-haw... 19:40 local time, and so far, it is exactly as I predicted - a day no more or less happy or unhappy than any other day.

I didn't reply mostly because my wife went through the same thing a couple years ago at a not-to-be-mentioned furniture manufacturer in Monroe. Fifteen years and a bum's shuffle out the door, and there's simply nothing that can be said.
Sorry anyone has to go through that. As soon as my wife is finished with school and back in the work force, I'm probably going to find something else to do myself.
As for Ford, the problems there started long ago and it's people like Jacques Nasser who show up to line their pockets and have little regard for the employees nor stockholders. Fortunately, Bill Ford wants to keep his name on the front-end of the cars they're making, and I think he'll turn it around. But just like my wife, the price for really bad decisions by upper management is paid by people far removed from the offices in which they were made.
