I would like to know what year this receiver was made and what it might be worth. It seem's to work but has a slight hum when your listning to it. The cabinet is in great condition and no rust that I can see anywhere. I would like to sell it to someone that will take care of it. If you would like me to send some pictures to you just email me..Thanks.....Rick #ricksshop@yahoo.com

Rick,
The hum may be first filter caps or a bad tube.
The following was a discription from the net.
"Prewar general coverage receiver with separate ham bands. This is National's 1940 "Silver Anniversary"model as stated on the diamond-shaped "NC" logo at the top center. Has rack-and-pinion band change. Pulling on the large tuning knob engages its pinion on a rack attached to a cast aluminum sliding coil tray to change bands. Switch on lower right is a mod. The NC-2-40C and D are very similar post-war receivers with an audio input phone jack at that lower right location"
I saw sources for a manual also..good luck.

Raymond Moore's book "Communications Receivers" lists 1945 to 1946. I have a NC-2-40D, made from 1946 to 1949 per this book, and it has calibrated ham bands in addition to the general coverage bands.
As far as price is concerned, I only have some general comments. It is not one of the sought after National receivers, such as the HRO or the NC-100 with the art deco front panel. Getting it to the buyer is another consideration. It's a large, heavy receiver, and shipping it involves packing so the package could be dropped from a table to the floor without damage (some would argue greater distances should be considered). Just putting it a cardboard box surrounded by foam peanuts won't do the job. I suggest you subscribe to the baswaplist reflector and get more ideas there. Hope this helps
