View Full Version : Surviving Coal Miner is a HAM!

From today's email:

Hello Fred,

My name is Bernie,my call is WB3DJL and I'm in Western Pa. about 30 miles south of Erie.

The reason for this Email is that I thought it might be better than trying to post on QRZ since 've never tried to do that before and I wanted to make sure this info got there. How better to accomplish that than to go right to the top?

What I want to do is to let all the Hams that use QRZ know this:

THE SURVIVING MINER IN THE WEST VIRGINIA MINING TRAGEDY IS A HAM. He is a Tech Class operator, his call is KC8VKZ (http://www.qrz.com/callsign/kc8vkz). thought here is that QRZ would be the best way to let a large number of Hams know this, and maybe they would want to send the young fellow their best wishes for a speedy recovery. According to the news, he is improving daily and hopefully he will recover fully.

If you could put this on QRZ, I would be very grateful. If you can't ,maybe I can get brave and try to post it myself.
Thanks

It would be nice to send your QSL card. #His look-ups are up to over 10,000 so far. #I might make an impact if his hospital room were wall to wall QSL cards http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

QSL cards..what a great idea....I will try to get the hospital address for those that want to send cards. It will probably be some time before he will be able to read them, but it would be nice that they were there when he wakes up.

The QSL card idea is excellent. I think we should all mail him a QSL card and a donation if we can do so. Excellent idea http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I mailed a get well QSL and a check for $100.00 to his home address.

I know for a fact a lot of Hams are sending cards with a few dollars in them. I am sure the family can use the money as the Insurance companies are slow and the families bills go on. Thanks Dan

It is nice that this information has been posted. This would be a great time for Amateur Radio Operators to show support to a fellow Ham and his family.
He will get a QSL from me, and from ARMAD.
God Bless him and his family. #Keep the others in mind too, they are going through tough times also. #We could send them some support also.
Great idea, and a great show of support!
Please post the hospital address soon.

Great idea on the QSL card.

I really have to hand it to those coal miners....they were 2 miles underground when that happened. I get sweaty palms when I go down into my basement!

God Bless them!

The ARRL website also pointed out he is a Amateur. They also suggested a QSL card with a note of support. I sent a card to this listed address on the ARRL site. I never checked, but I'm guessing it's the same as what he has listed here.

After some hard searching, I came up with an address for the hospital. My hope is that they see to it he gets the mail. I want to thank the Hams who take the time to send cards.
I hope my small contribution of time to this effort will result in that room getting it's walls filled with qsl cards and good wishes to what I consider a very brave man. I also get sweaty hands going into the basement.

I thought I read that he was transferred to a hospital in Pittsburgh. I wonder if there is a way to double check. I already sent a QSL to his home address but I would really like to send a gift to the hospital address. I'm sure all his family is there.

I don't think it's a great idea to send cards and stuff to the hospital. Them folks got enough to do without having to handle thousands of QSL cards, however well meaning they are. Send them to his home address, if his family wants him to see them, they can take them to the hospital themselves...

He WAS in Pittsburgh. They flew him back toWV. so he would be closer to home. You can find some info on Yahoo and also at: www.register-herald.com/news/
this is the Beckley,WV newspaper.
And as 8:30 there have been11,620 lookups for his call on qrz.

Everyone should send the minimum of $1.00..
I have to agree, the family will need all the help they can get for a long time, and $1.00 wouldn't hurt anyone but 300,000 QSL cards with the dollar attached would really help the family in their time of need . #Show your support. #Would be nice to see CNN pick up on this one... #73's K8BBE:;):

Just think what $1.00 from each person who has looked him up in the past week would do for his family.

I am sure the mining company will have to pay for all his medical expenses.

With a good lawyer, I hope this guy doesn't ever have to work for a coal mine again.

I sent a QSL and gift to his P.O. box, and almost forgot about the $.02 rate increase.

This is a truly good cause, $1 from everyone and a card of support is a great idea. Things are a little slim right now around here, but a dollar is easily managed. I dont have any cards printed so ill just draw one up on an index card with colored pens like i did when i first started in radio many years ago. its easier to personalize it that way...give it a go, you would be surprised at what you can come up with.

Overall, im very pleased with the thread! :-)

I SUGGEST THAT ALL HAMS SENDING A QSL CARD TO OUR SURVIVING MINER HAM ENCLOSE A BUCK OR TWO OR WHATEVER .. We do that for DX when we send a

Mailed my card and 20 this morning. Hope it helps. Sorry I couldn't do this for the rest of the Victims' families.

Last night I printed the address for mailing, and at that time there were 18254 lookups. Now there have been 21661 lookups. If just 1% were for mailing purposes, we have done well.

This is from TV channel 6 in Beckley,WV.

McCloy condition remains the same

The doctors treating twenty-six-year-old Randal McCloy Junior, said this morning there has been no significant change in his condition. McCloy remains in critical condition with a fever.

Doctors at West Virginia University's Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown did not express any concern that McCloy has not fully awakened from a medically induced coma. Neurosurgeon Dr. Julian Bailes says it could be a lengthy process.

Dr. Bailes says they have no clear clue of the extent of his injury or the time of his recovery.

But The doctors do say a test of McCloy's brain activity showed a lot of activity on both sides of his brain. He says it's too early to tell what that means.

I sent my QSL Card and $$ today. First QSL Card I've sent in a couple of years. Now I'm looking at my HF antennas and getting them up this afternoon. Can't wait to get back on the air on HF.

I saw the news here in CA last night. How come no one at CNN/FOX/NBC is doing a story about this??

My card says, "God Bless you Randal and get on the air as soon as you wake up!"

Mine Safety is a priority...

Anyway.. Glad he was a HAM.. I wanted to mention we need more Miners that are HAMS... For instance I am the only Ham at our Plant... I have a few gusy interested.. Hopefully by summers end I will have added one or more...

When I first started at Lehigh 10 years ago. There had been a Ham working there.. but he moved on...

When parts vendors come in and meet with us.. My boss gets a kick out of how they come in and want to know .. Where is the HAM..? They see my license plates.. We met find out most of our parts vendors are hams.. Ironic. But makes sence.. I work in the Electrical department... (supervisor)..

Anyway... Glad he survives.. Our Prayers are with all the families of that disaster..

Hi guys, let us go one step further than sending QSL cards to the injured miner.......reseach tells me that he has a family, also: the look-up on his call sign have gone outta site, why not enclose a couple of bucks in each QSL card to help the family. It certainly was a bad year in 2005 for a lot of folks. Why not help this family also. I sent a few bucks, lets get the ham fraternity going and help this fellow ham and his family. Just a comment from my observation.......73 to all, and: think positive.........Duane w7hw http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I find it odd the news media seems to be avoiding or ignoring outside support such as this QSL-card-and-donation campaign. An internet search reveals no such news items.
As any of us who have lived through injury or death in the family knows, money is much more useful than cards and flowers. Even very small contributions can add up to a lot of relief for the family.

MINING DISASTER SURVIVOR RANDY MCCLOY, KC8VKZ, REPORTED IMPROVING

There's encouraging news this week on the medical condition of Randy McCloy,
KC8VKZ, the sole survivor of the January 2 Sago mining disaster in West
Virginia. Rick Robinson, W8ZT, reports he spoke with McCloy's
brother-in-law, Rick McGee January 18, and received an upbeat report on the
26-year-old miner's progress.

"He was sitting up in bed and eating ice chips," he said. "His dialysis
treatments have been reduced to every other day as his kidney function [is
returning]." Other reports say McCloy's heart and liver functions have
improved, his muscle deterioration has abated, his neurological condition is
stable and he's been breathing on his own. His doctors say McCloy exhibits
"purposeful movements" and appears to be responding to his family.

Robinson says McGee told him that McCloy's wife, Anna, expressed
appreciation from the outpouring of good wishes from the Amateur Radio
community and elsewhere.

"His family wants to thank everyone for the cards and letters that arrive
daily in the large plastic postal bins," he said. "The mail keeps his wife
occupied and gives her consolation that so many think of her and her husband
and family." Randy and Anna McCloy live in Simpson, West Virginia, and have
two young children. A Technician class licensee, McCloy is a relatively new
radio amateur, according to Robinson.

Well-wishers have been sending cards and QSLs to McCloy at PO Box 223,
Philippi, WV 26435.

The Charleston Gazette reported January 19 that McCloy was out of intensive
care and likely will be able to leave West Virginia University's Ruby
Memorial Hospital in Morgantown within a week or two for a rehabilitation
facility. His physicians say it's difficult to predict how fully McCloy will
recover over the long haul, however, because his case is unusual. McCoy was
the only miner among 13 men trapped for more than 40 hours in an Upshur
County coal mine that filled with deadly carbon monoxide following a January
2 explosion.

McCloy reportedly is eligible for immediate medical and wage-replacement
benefits as well as for workers compensation benefits based on the extent of
his injuries. In addition, a fund has been set up to accept donations for
his benefit: the Randal McCloy Jr Fund, c/o Clear Mountain Bank, 1889 Earl
Core Rd, Morgantown, WV 26505.

Survivor Moved to Rehab Center By VICKI SMITH, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 16 minutes ago

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The sole survivor of the Sago Mine disaster was transferred Thursday to a rehabilitation hospital, where his family expects him to undergo weeks, or possibly months, of therapy.

Randal McCloy Jr., 26, remained in fair condition, doctors said, no longer in a coma but still unable to speak.

"The family is very pleased with his progress. However, they are fully aware that the recovery process is still ongoing, and it will be a long process," said family spokeswoman Aly Goodwin Gregg. "We're talking about weeks and months.

"While his recovery has been tremendous to date, obviously, this is the time we move into the rehabilitation phase — where it's work," she said. McCloy's wife, Anna, "remains cautiously optimistic that he will make a recovery from this."

McCloy was part of a 13-member crew that entered International Coal Group Inc.'s Sago Mine early Jan. 2 to resume production after a holiday shutdown. An explosion tore through the mine and trapped them deep underground, where they were exposed to deadly carbon monoxide for more than 41 hours until searchers found them.

By then, all but McCloy had died. He was carried out of the mine, battered and barely breathing, on Jan. 4 and has since been treated at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown and at a hospital in Pittsburgh.

The Sago disaster and a Jan. 19 conveyor belt fire in Logan County that killed two miners led Gov. Joe Manchin to call for mine safety reforms in the state. Lawmakers approved the bill Monday, and Manchin signed the legislation on Thursday.

The law mandates that miners be provided with emergency communicators and tracking devices. Among other things, it also requires mine operators to store extra air supplies underground.

The cause of the Sago explosion remains under investigation, and McCloy's story is one that investigators are eager to hear. However, it's unclear whether he will be able to tell it.

Doctors in Morgantown have said McCloy may have suffered brain damage from the carbon monoxide poisoning, but the extent of that damage is not yet known.

McCloy's two children, 18 months and 4 years old, visit him frequently and his wife "is by his side at all times," Gregg said.

While doctors have been issuing almost daily updates on McCloy's progress, Gregg said that will now stop.

"But when there is news to share, the family will share it," she said. "They appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers."

FROM WBOY-TV—Clarksburg, WV

This is the most recent info I have found.
-------------------------------------------
The stepfather of Sago survivor Randall McCloy is speaking out. Tim Flint sat down with 12 News Friday and thanked supporters for all their prayers. Flint says McCloy continues to improve and even the little things bring a smile to his face. It's been a long month. "From the point where doctors on the first night didn't think he was gonna make it until now," says Flint. "I still think he's going to make a full recovery." "We have gotten cards as far away as New Zealand." He says Randy still wears a feeding tube, but "each day he's eating more. Starting out with pudding. He's worked his way up to some chicken nuggets. Some Taco Bell." He can't help but chuckle as he remembers better times with his stepson. "He loves to be in the woods, whether it's hunting fishing, camping." Flint says NASCAR is his favorite pastime with Randy. Despite the good memories his thoughts often wander to that night, at the Sago Baptist Church, where he heard the life-changing news. "When I heard 'Randy McCloy,' I just grabbed his mother and Anna, and just headed for the hospital." Stil, he says often thinks about the twelve other families he left behind. "All you can do is give them a hug and say your thoughts and your prayers are with them." As he goes back to work, Flint has new bounce in his step. The prayers seem to be working. "I'm just thinking about the fact that he's improving every day. That just keeps me in an upbeat mood." Flint isn't the official spokesman for the family, but he has taken on a role of keeping friends and family updated on McCloy's progress.

According to the major wires, the latest news (March 2, 2006) is that Randall McCloy is having conversations with family and friends, responding appropriately, and, best of all, makes jokes occasionally. His family is especially happy that his humor and personality are returning. No word on whether he can yet walk or not. His wife was quoted as saying that he has limited memory of the accident, has talked about it in a very limited way, used the word "tragic" to describe what happened, but doesn't elaborate further than that at this point. Taken all together, Randall's progress has been tremendous in a very short period of time.

Injured Miner Randy McCloy, KC8VKZ, Talking, Joking:

Randy McCloy, KC8VKZ--the lone survivor of the January 2 Sago Mine disaster in Upshur County, West Virginia--is continuing to recover. Speaking on The Early Show on CBS TV March 2, McCloy's wife Anna told co-anchor Hannah Storm that her husband is talking again and even telling jokes.

"He'll listen to jokes and understand," Anna McCloy told Storm. "He'll talk to me and the kids--just regular conversation."

She also said McCloy has told her he remembers "bits and pieces" of the mining disaster that left 12 of his co-workers dead of carbon monoxide poisoning. McCloy, 26, who's been in a rehabilitation facility since January 26, also answers questions appropriately, recognizes his family and can "move quite well," Anna McCloy said. She has remained at her husband's side since his rescue.

McCloy eats with assistance and has expressed distaste for institutional cuisine, instead preferring the restaurant and fast food fare his wife supplies.

Anna McCloy says she's "not quite sure" if her husband realizes he was the only survivor of the mine mishap. "I don't question him about it. When he wants to talk about it, I listen to him, but I don't push him, and I don't question him," she said.

One of Randal McCloy's physicians, Dr Julian Bailes, told Storm that McCloy has "improved beyond our expectations" during rehabilitation. "I think we see his old personality coming back."

Well-wishers have been sending cards and QSLs to McCloy at PO Box 223, Philippi, WV 26435. A fund has been set up to accept donations for McCloy's benefit: The Randal McCloy Jr Fund, c/o Clear Mountain Bank, 1889 Earl Core Rd, Morgantown, WV 26505.
