Well, after a total radio blackout for the past couple of weeks, 80 and 160 came alive last night....strong lower 48 signals on both. Don't know what it will be like tonight, but I will certainly check it out. Most likely this is chordal hop propagation...the signals all seem to have that telltale "culvert bounce" tone to them. We shall see if it lasts.

Chordal hop is multiple reflections off the ionosphere with no intervening ground reflections in between (chords of a circle in geometric terms). It happens when the ionosphere is very high. It can have very very low loss under the right conditions. Generally only observed on the low bands

Well, the chords were still hopping last night. I heard the 1895 kc (that's KHz for you newfangled whippersnappers) net like it was local. I definitely need meself a leeenyar though. Have a real nice 4-1000z sitting on my bench for just such a purpose. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
