View Full Version : Accuracy of QRZ Callsign Database
I think the folks at QRZ have provided a great service -- a forum that allows folks like us to talk radio and sometimes speak what ever is on our minds, as long as we abide by some easy rules. Unfortunately, there are a few folks who didn't like to play by the rules and, thus, got banned. This is where the issue comes in.
Folks that are banned, often also has their call sign removed from the QRZ database. Understanding that QRZ is NOT the FCC, there is nothing saying QRZ database needs to be up-to-date or accurate. However, the ability to look up a call sign is important and a key draw to this site.
At this point, I have never looked up someones name after a QSO and not found them here -- only examples I have found is folks complaining they have been banned at other sites.
However, this policy of removing data vs restricting access makes me wonder if I need to rely on other sites to get an address for a QSL card.
Like I said, like the service offered (especially for the price). Just may be time to re-think the delete vs restrict policy.

The few stations that have been removed from the QRZ.com database have been removed at their request, not as the result of being "banned".

I frequently cannot find a call on QRZ and have to go to the World Wide Hamcall Callsign Server (http://hamcall.net/call). It happens about every 8 to 10 lookups.
However, I find a lot of inaccuracies in the World Wide Server, whereas the QRZ database seems quite accurate. In addition, I prefer the QRZ approach to allowing what amounts to a little home page for each ham. It is a lot more friendly. Therefore, I always use QRZ first, and if the call is missing, I go to the World Wide Server.
thanks 2i - wasn't familiar with that one.

Since the site is free, I would think the accuracy is what it should be, and the people paying for this site to exist should be the ones who set the rules for who is listed, who isn't, etc. If you paid for this service, and part of the service guarentee was accuracy, then I would see where your complaint is.
However, I would suggest that if you need accurate information, the only accurate site would be, at least for US callsigns, the FCC ULS system. For other countries, that would be whatever website they have, or a phone call to that particular agency for the information if they don't have it online.
Some people think that if you're not on QRZ, you're not legit. People need to keep in mind that QRZ offers the service as a convienence, but the callsign issuing authority, and thus who needs to be accurate and fair in listing everyone would be the FCC.

From what I've heard - and Glen just verified is it's at their request. Given qrz ISN'T the fcc, I'm not sure what the legalities of them carrying the data against the wishes of the licensed owner.
I'm sure a claim could be made that they are essentially reflecting/mirroring the fcc database, but maybe it's easier for them to just remove it.
I often look up people when doing psk, and if they have one, it's nice to see the little bios people have, or pictures of their station.

RDN I do the same thing, as for people being removed, Everytime I have looked up a call sign and it isn't in the database, it usually has a link directing you to the FCC ULS System.

If you folks do not like the way the qrz system is run...go elsewhere for your information.
No one is forcing you to use a system that you do not like.
