Personally I'd be very happy if I got one. The thin-skinned out there are complaining about this one though:

Conservatives "Miffed" By White House Holiday Card (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/nationworld/orl-0512070339dec07,0,5444016.story?coll=orl-home-headlines)

Seems to me one of the more moronic complaints. A holiday card is a catch-all for those who celebrate Christmas and those who don't. You've got Hanukka, you've got Kwanza, you've got New Years - issuing a generic holiday card this time of year covers just about everyone. The other choices are a) send out specific Christmas cards, which are essentially meaningless to people who don't celebrate Christmas, or b) send out several cards to each person - a Christmas card and a Hannukah card, etc. - at taxpayer expense, of course. Alternately, he could ask religious preference when accepting campaign contributions and send out the appropriate cards.

If Hanukkah didn't happen near Christmas, this wouldn't be an issue. They'd just send out Christmas cards in December and Hanukkah cards in June or something. If anyone should be complaining, it should be the Jews who's wintery holiday has more often than not been swallowed up either by Christmas or "Holiday" in this country as far as I know.

Seems to me that the most fair solution is to send a holiday card. Nobody is trying to erase Christmas or anything. People are just acknowledging that not everyone in the country celebrates it. And that's OK since this is not a theocracy.

Otherwise, are only the people who celebrate Christmas worthy of receiving good wishes on a card?

Quote[/b] ]Bush "claims to be a born-again, evangelical Christian. But he sure doesn't act like one," said Joseph Farah, editor of the conservative Web site WorldNetDaily.com. "I threw out my White House card as soon as I got it."

What a complete, selfish, self involved jackass!

So he's born again, what about the OTHER religions? Good lord what a bunch of morons.

For once Bush is acting like what he IS. The President. Kudos. And I dont even really like him.

political bloody correctness again,

this is why county councils in britain are talking about not putting up christmas lights,

this is why the english cricket team cant sing the anthem bethlehem in pakistan,

this is why we cant say 'wife' but replace it with 'partner' because it might offend gay coworkers,

this is why teachers cant say 'black board',

this is why starbucks staff cant say 'black coffee',

this is why the christians cant even say christmas,

because the white natives in power say that it WILL OFFEND the minority groups but the minority groups are NOT OFFENDED

whatever next, cant say white, brown, black and yellow and replace more pc names of those colours???

once it gets to that il laugh in histeria for at least a day

Rick it's already gotten to that over here. I was out of circulation for a little over a decade, totally out of the loop. When I came back, I found you couldn't say 'oriental' because it's considered racist. It's been replaced by 'asian'. Strange, now 'asian' stands for Indian, Asiatic Russian, Chinese, Mongolian, etc. It used to be 'black' was acceptable now it's 'African-American'. I knew a woman who was deeply offended by being called 'little lady' even though it was not meant to be offensive and her stature was small. She wanted to be a 'woman'. Ended up giving a distinguished College Vice President a lecture for 20 minutes on it. Yup, John was right, strange days indeed. Rick, I could write a book on this with all the 'training' I got when I qualified as a Peace Officer here.

Well, Great Britain has an official state religion, as far as I know. We don't. It's not just a matter of political correctness here.

As for those other complaints, it's PC crap, IMO. But comparing the US and UK on the religion thing is apples and oranges.

Maybe I should send my "generic" Christmas Card:

"Money is tight
And times are hard
So here's your stink'n
Christmas Card"

Season's Beatings.

7V:

Actually the Christmas cards, Holiday cards, whatever, do NOT go out at taxpayer expense. All of the elected officials have to use money that comes from outside sources (i.e. "contributions") to cover the cost of things like that.

Now most elected officials do not have any problem acquiring outside funds, but the cost of such items is definitely not charged to the taxpayer.

You know that we've reached a new low when it is dangerous to wish your neighbor a pleasant holiday, for fear that you will do so in a manner that displeases him.

I am absolutely amazed at the number of people who are up in arms about "Happy Holidays". As I've explained many times, here in the Midwest, "the holidays" start sometime around Halloween, and end sometime after St. Patrick's Day, and include everything in between. "Happy Holidays" is more a statement of one's general condition than any sort of a political utterance.

To paraphrase Mark Twain slightly, America is the only Christian theocracy on Earth where the Christians claim they are being oppressed!

According to the story, the cost of the cards is being charged to the Republican National Comittee. I would feel that Christmas is not objectionable, but for business purposes, Happy Holidays should suffice.

JAA:

Happy 200th birthday.

There are federal laws against sending out things like Christmas cards at taxpayers' expense.

Also, anything that is sent out officially by any Congressman, Senator, President, etc., can be "franked". "Franked" means that only the signature of the official is required and not a postage stamp. If you will note, all things like Christmas cards do have a postage stamp or some type of "post paid" mark on the envelope.

In recent years, I've started started wishing people a happy winter solstice.

I'm hopeful it'll catch on, since that seems to be why we celebrate this time of year.

It was refreshing when I went to Walmart last night and the cashier and the door man both said Merry Christmas. Oh, the teller at my local bank also wished us a Merry Christmas.

So, with that in mind - Merry Christmas gang.

Just more proof that the extremists are being heard more than ever before, from both sides. More extremist religious right crap that has little bearing on reality and a large dose or intolerance for anyone that doesn't practice their form of holidays. Last time I checked this country was rather pluralistic in its beliefs, and the president is the president of all the people in this country; why the hell should he send a card that singles out only Christians? More extremist non-sense from the wacko extreme religious right.

Years ago, I used to publish a nationwide radio-related newsletter. I can recall more than once being on the phone with a subscriber or the writer of an article, and wishing them "Happy Christmas", and having them chastise me, informing me that their religion was something other than Christian (in each case it was Jewish), and remind me that they didn't celebrate Christmas. The merchants who wish their customers "Seasons Greetings" are just trying to pass along a positive message while offending as few people as possible.

Some people are even offended when they see the holiday spelt "Xmas," and proceed to lecture about removing Christ from Christmas.

My response to that is that the letter X is a cross, the defining symbol of christianity. That usually shuts 'em up.

Ever hear CW operators on the ham bands laboriously spell out the word CHRISTMAS instead of XMAS, while using the abbreviations XFMR for TRANSFORMER, XTAL for CRYSTAL, etc.?

I got a Christmas card from George and Laura a couple of years ago but I haven't received one since.

Maybe it was because I ignored the SASE and the request for donations to the GOP.
