In case some of you forgot- tomorrow Dec. 7th is Pearl Harbor day.
I have often wondered if it is taught in schools today. I remember very well where I was when we heard it on the radio.

My Mom was in the hospital a while back and to check her cognitive state a nurse asked her what holiday was coming up. Mom answered "Armistice Day". The nurse wrote down that Mom was "impaired" because the answer the nurse expected was "Veterans' Day". The Nurse had never heard of "Armistice Day", and had no idea why we observe Veterans' Day on November 11. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

I am friends with only three WW-II vets. #I've known many more but they've moved on. #LCDR Everett Buck, USN(Ret), W4RRX and I have three or four Qs a week, his health permitting. He was stationed in the Canal Zone as a radioman and copied initial alerts of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. #The many stories he's shared about his assignments during WWII has made many interesting evenings. #He remembers a lot of details and imparts a sense of the nightmares he and his crew went through.
We're losing these vets at a rate of 8,000 per day. #Cherish them.

Everyone please remember to fly the Stars and Stripes tomorrow.
I have my 3X5 flag and staff standing by the front door, ready to be displayed tomorrow morning.
It's the least I can do to honor the men and women of our "greatest generation".

Back in US history class in Jr. High (remember, this was only 7 years ago) we spent about 2 or 3 days on WWII and was only because the teacher was a big fan of it. Later that semester, we spent 3 weeks on the civil rights movement.
In High School, we read a chapter in the book about the war and that was about it.
There are plenty of kids walking around this campus who don't know what WWI is or when WWII occured (some know 1940s) or what Korea meant much less Vietnam (They do know that the President skipped it though, since that's really important).

Well we think about WWII and how many of todays students know about it and have studied it. How many students do you think could go to an unlabeled map and say, "That is Iraq." Our generation, that from the 80's on, does not have the sence of history that is needed. When music videos becomes greater then who our country is and where it came from, we have a problem.

Oh!....you mean hip hop, bling bling, and white males are evil. They seem to be the most important messages in America today aside from the new battery powered air fresheners.
You don't sound very patriotic to me knocking the system so.

Those veterans could tell even tell you what the weather was like on that day. There was a little Nip in the air. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

When an example High School proficiency exam was published in a Washington newspaper a few years ago, I only knew a couple of the answers to questions about American History.
History was/is one of my interests, but the questions were about relatively trivial people and events that I have never heard of, and frankly have no desire to know about.
