Tonight the NCCC will host a pre-SS "practice" session from 0230-0300 UTC (Friday UTC). Same exchange as SS, but there is one dupe allowed per band. I don't really know what that means exactly, but I assume it means you can contact a station on more than one band.

It's a great way to warm up for SS, work out the bugs in your software/hardware, and get psyched for the real thing. Things happen about 40 kc from the bottom of the 80,20,20 meter bands.

If any of you are thinking about getting into computer logging, the next few weeks would be a good time to get a program (N1MM is free) and learn to use it. Contesting with a computer is another, really really fun, way to go.

Hope to see you tonight, the more the merrier.

Sounds like fun! And since my newly cleaned and reassembled R-7 is now vertical again--I think I better get on the air!

I might be wrong, but I think the accepted abbreviation for single sideband is "SSB" not "SS".

I think in this case SS = Sweepstakes contest

Is this a new trend? Practice for a contest? Serious, here. Haven't run across that before.

Sweepstakes is a special case. The exchange is more complex than most contests. Errors are worth double negative points. Gud QSO =
2pts. Busted loses those 2, plus 2 penalty points.

HTW,

I don't think it is new. IN the summer the NCCC hosts 30 minute "mini-Sprints" every Thursday night, you take your best 7 scores of the summer. Winners east and west of the Mississippi get a bottle of wine. So that is like a "real" contest, and this just grew out of that. With SS coming up people are getting ready, checking software, etc... so why not change the format for the Thursday night Sprints for a couple of weeks.

It is fun, join in tonight.

I hope they'll do that again next week. I was only able to make 3 Q's last night (on 40) , due to a family obligation that ran late. Anyway, I know my renewed R-7 works as WOW transmitting as it does receiving. All that antenna work I've been doing is paying off!

Someone mentioned how long 40 was--I concur!

Of course not. It means Spread Spectrum CW.

Bump! To find out if the practice will recur tonight.

All my antennas, except for the Rx only, are in their SS configuration. I'll reposition the Delta peak support tomorrow, so it only needs one mast--dictated because the other support failed. I haven't worked on it all week due to flu-like symptoms--a "bird" cold, perhaps.

Give me a time and a frequency Steve and I'll try to torture you with my 'ham fist.'

Yes, we are on again tonight for the practice. 0330-0400 UTC tonight.

See ya. In last weeks warm-up for my club, we had THREE experienced guys discover troubles with software. If you are going to play SS it is worth finding problems NOW, not on Saturday.

I'd stay up to play, but that's past my bedtime.

Past my bedtime too. But, I have toothpicks to hold my eyes open. And that too shall be practice for Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Try to jump in, first timers. The real SS exchange format will be used. You can hear what it actually sounds like, and feel what it's like to send it. It's "Chopsticks" for brass pounders.
