Hello everyone
My name is Michele & my call sign is ki4mdc and I just wanted to say that I'm happy to be a part of the amateur radio community again. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I'm the wife of Bob ki4ltg and we live in Florida with our 3 kids. Anyway I don't want to bore any1 with details, but I hope to make some new friends here and just to let you know, that my husband & I are both studying for the General (we're technicians right now) and he told me that if I passed b4 him, he would not talk to me so I feel I know have an incentive to pass...... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I do love amateur radio & I'm glad to be back.

Welcome and tell Bob, that's ok because you would be operating under your new priveleges anyway and he wouldn't be able to talk to you. That should help throw the incentive back his way. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hey,
If this group can't confuse you, nobody can. That is what some of us do best. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Seriously welcome and good luck

Hi Michele,
When I wrote my QRZ bio, I had you and the OM man in mind:
Quote[/b] ]Before I close, I want to speak directly to the newer members of the amateur community. Welcome. Welcome. Welcome. I frequent some of the forums and I read all the code/no code and old fart/newbie crap. I strongly urge you to do what I do - treat it like the garbage it is. As with any segment of society, there is a percentage of the amateur population that can never say anything positive. The vast majority of the amateur community welcomes you with open arms. Include me in that wonderful crowd. Take every opportunity you have to learn as much as you can and have fun. Be positive and help others along the way. You'll be richly rewarded in exchange, without ever having to ask.
So there. Maybe that will help you see why I love ham radio so much. It offers friendship, fun, excitement, and challenges. I really hope you discover how lucky you are to have joined the amateur family.
It was true then and it's still true today. #WELCOME!

Just tell him "Ya sure won't because I'll be on 20 phone and you will be on 2 FM!" That will give him good reason to keep up with ya on studying!! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Now they get to duplicate the ham gear or fight over who's getting on the air. I'm sure glad my wife isn't a ham. I know enough to let her win the "disputes" around here.

My friend Bill has been a ham for about 25 years now. #His son caught the bug quite early, and Bill made sure the boy used his privileges in each of the (then) five license classes to explore the world of amateur radio.
Now Bill had been an Advanced for years. #But when his son reached that level at age 13, Bill started getting worried. #Sure enough, there was a race on to see who would make Extra first. #
The boy passed his 20wpm exam first, but lost it on the written. #Bill was really sweating bullets on that one!
In the end, Bill got there first, but only by a couple of months. #His son made it at age 14.
Yup, incentives do help!
Welcome, Michele and Bob. Hope you have tons of fun with amateur radio. I'm sure you will. There's so much to try, it'll keep you busy for a lifetime.
WELCOME!
If you can get confused anywhere...
this is the place.
best of luck on your upgrade.
get the code down first.when you feel ready then start studying the written part.that is how I did it.It only took me about 18 months.
everyone does it different.Do whatever is comfortable to your brain.Once again:
welcome and best of luck on your upgrade. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Welcome to you and your husband, Michele. You will very quickly learn who among the many regulars can give you both good guidance when needed.
Doing the upgrade to general is a good idea, most especially with this foolish NPRM&O hanging over everyone. The written test is not really all that difficult, and QRZ has some excellent resources to help you both get through that part of the exam.
The code test is, for many of us, a bit harder and more demanding, but the time you put in now will make a big difference to you in the future. Yes, it takes work and a commitment, but you will be surprised at how quickly your work will be rewarded as you continue to practice. The worst part, I think, is the "stage fright" that often accompanies the actual test for Element 1.
Once you have achieved your General, however, you will never have to make excuses to any other ham. Ever.
I hope to meet you both on the air some time.

Again thank you everybody for the warm welcome. I'm glad I know that I can come here & get more confused...... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Unlike my hubby, I take my time and I'm not in a rush to upgrade until I have all the facts straight, that's why he's been failing the test. I will try to take the test next month & see what happens.

Enjoy the hobby as much as you can, and if you upgrade before your OM and he doesn't speak to you, these OF's on the forum will. (I think that's a good thing)? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Don't be a stranger - either 'round the board or on the air. Many interesting and enlightening folks inhabit both.

Hi Michelle,
I'm always glad to see another YL join the ranks. Regarding the statement made by your OM about not speaking to you if you make General before him....funny stuff! My OM has been a ham about 15 years longer than I have but he has let his code copying abilities slide over the years. Now when he hears me send "OM", he runs into the room and says, "What did you just say about me?" I just give an evil laugh and tell him that he will never know unless he gets a code reader! It's all in good fun really. Once you get on HF you will find your niche whether it is CW, phone, digital, ragchewing, award hunting or contesting. Tell us: is there anything in particular you are currently looking forward to trying on HF?
Welcome, welcome, welcome! I hope we have the opportunity to chat on the air soon.

Hi Deanne K5XYL
Thank you for the welcome. For now I'm just going to stick with phone on HF until I can upgrade. Eventually I'm going to try the code but I haven't even tried to start that yet. Like in my previous posts I'm doing 1 thing at a time at my own pace (being older that will be slow pace..... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif ) Anyway hope to keep in touch with all of you, and thanks again......

Hmm, did you just say you were going to get on HF? I wouldnt do that yet, not with a NCT License.
But anyways Welcome to the Hobby of Ham Radio, you will enjoy everything you can do, even if you just have a handheld, you can talk a ways and have lots of fun with just a HT, so that all from here, lol.
