Although there are several services out there who, for a fee, will help you renew your license, you can do it yourself very quickly and for no charge at all on the FCC website. Not only was I surprised that there was no renewal fee it took less than 3 minutes to accomplish.

I hope people are aware that they need not spend 8 dollars to do something that is absolutely free and very easy to boot.

Membership does have its privledges.

IF an amateur is a member in good standing with the ARRL the ARRL VEC will renew your license for free.

Go to the ARRL web page and drop them a line on the feedback to get all the information and forms required.

This thread should be retitled to "Duh".

Not as stupid of a post as one might think...

If you look at the license testing materials this topic is definately NOT addressed in any detail. Nor are any of the FCCs procedures.

Now should certain FCC procedures be inclued in the study material? Probably so / but its not.

So for someone who is NOT active in amateur radion for whatever reason(s) and who wish to renew their license this question is not a stupid question. The alternative would be to drop out entirely and that would be far worse.

My license was due to be renewed shortly before I upgraded to general. I thought “No problem, when I pass the test it will be taken care of.” I didn’t think I could possibly fail the test. I was wrong. I failed on two occasions. Finally it was within the 90 days before I would expire and the next test session was going to be a month after my expiration date.

I went to the FCC site. The FCC site is very similar to most of the other government sites I have ever had the occasion to visit. Not particularly user friendly. I finally called the FCC on my cell phone so I could have my computer on line through my dial up. It took twenty minutes with a representative from the FCC helping me find the right pages before I finally managed to ‘get ’er done.’

Maybe they have done a rehaul on the site since then, but it was a real drag for me.

I did pass the general test the next time I took it too.

I vaguely remember something about in the tech book when I was learning that material. But it was the edition before the current one. I don't about the lastest version.

I did help a novice renew on-line a year or two ago. It wasn't very hard at all and only took a few minutes.
