Saddam and seven of his henchmen go on trial next Wednesday for the 1982 murders of 143 people in Dujail, a Shiite village north of Baghdad. The trial is to be held in public and possibly broadcast live on television.

Saddam will probably wind up as dictator again...an evil secularist hated by all but a unifying, smothering force nonetheless, and eventually supported by the west as a bulwark against the fundamentalist Iranians.

It'll be 1980 all over again.

Check it out, we expended 2,000 American lives and countless Iraqi civilian lives so we can prosecute the murder of a 182 people.

I really really really hope they can charge that clown with something a little more substantial than that!

Hussein's defence lawyers will argue that he has immunity from prosecution at his trial in Iraq later this month, according to a London-based member of his legal team. "He had full immunity under the prevailing Iraqi constitution and you cannot have a retroactive legislation that removes that immunity... These people were tried and found guilty and sentenced to death according to the Iraqi criminal code." The defence will argue that those killed had been found guilty under Iraq's laws and Saddam's only role was to sign their death warrants.
