From the article:
"I hope that Greenville Tech will make sure that all of its officials are sensitized and trained and know how to treat people," Dr. John Corbett, of Springfield Baptist Church, told Ruiz.

Community College Admin calls Katrina Victims who are relocating YARD APES! (http://www.thecarolinachannel.com/news/4973265/detail.html)

# What a stupid stupid comment on her part! People like her are the exception in Greenville and not the rule. Greenville is host to the most diverse population in the Southest. German, French, Indian, Pakistani, British, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Iranian, Iraqi, Afgani, Italian, Greek, all of Mexico and central and South America, Russian, Phillippino, and Australia. Did I mention African Americans, Polish and Vietnamese?
# The only place that I can think of that is more diverse within a 200 mile radius is Atlanta. With the exception of the illegals, all are welcome.

Yard Ape is a racial slur directed at Black African Americans. It is akin to porch monkey.
Before it became a racial slur it was used to describe a rowdy childs behavior on the playgroung. Ape and monkey are considered racial slurs against dark skinned peoples who's ancestry dates back to tribal Africa.

Well, I can't call my best friend a honkey or a cracker either without receiving some grief from an offendable person within earshot. I was told that cracker meant the slave owners who used a whip, hence the cracking noise and the term cracker. Yet it is perfectly permissable for me to be called and refered to as a cracker by a Black American of tribal African heritage. While I will not use the "N" word and while it is OK for Black Americans of tribal African heritage to uae it on each other, I do not believe it is their call to make as to whether or not I call my good friend a stupid cracker or not.
Double standards to say the least and are considered payback for slavery and civil rights violations that happened before I was ever born. I do not see how we as a country will ever move forward in respect to racism and the past if we don't do just that, MOVE FORWARD! But we are not allowed, It must constantly be held over our heads, again, as payback, for something some dead person who's not related to me did 60 to 250 years ago.
I do not condone racism in ANY form nor do I consider myself a racist and yes I have been called a monkey by the children I grew up with based soley on my looks.

There used to be a minor league baseball team in Atlanta, Georgia, that played in the old stadium on Ponce-de-Leon Drive out near the old Sears - Roebuck main store / warehouse called the Atlanta Crackers.

They were gone by the time I was a freshman at Georgia Tech starting in September 1962. However, my mother-in-law had been a fan of the team since World War II (she became an Atlanta Braves fan until she died 3 years ago).

I know that when I was in the Atlanta area that being called a "cracker" wasn't really considered bad. It meant someone from the "country" rather than a "city-slicker".

I'd like to know the full context of her statement. I have heard the term used before, but never against any particular
ethnic group. In fact, the first time I heard it, it was used by the mother of a black family in my neighborhood, to a mixed ethnic group of noisy children, myself one of them.

Yard apes are children, aka kids, aka house apes, aka rug rats, aka bread snappers, etc. Perceiving and presenting it otherwise is nothing but race baiting.

But then, gay used to mean happy. And chauvinism used to mean adherence to a cause, any cause. Now everything is sex, sex, sex, or race, race, race, and the meaning of the third person singular form of "to be" is negotiable in a court of law. As long as you're politically correct or popular, stupidity is wisdom.

And being SQUARE use to be "honest, fair, good for your word, wholesome." #Then latter it came to mean "Nerd, old fashion, unprogressive, unhip "not #with it, plastic man". #I do not see how yard ape has any racial connotation whatsoever. #I think people are just getting sensitive to the point of being ridiculous. It's an unequally applied scrutiny, and a form of extortion by one group to extract advantage from another. The civil rights act forbids unfair, unequal treatment, on the basis of race, etc. Especially in public financed institutions.

I guess I worked in the state prison for too many years. I'd actually never heard the exact term "yard ape" before, but it only took a few microseconds for me to decide what it could be taken to mean.

And yes, a cracker is a white person. If anyone wants lessons in various "other" dialects spoken in certain subcultures in our fine nation, lemme know. I know a few of them quite well. My wife still wants to know how I can translate some of the songs I hear my teenager listening to. I tell her, that song is new, the words are not.

I've heard term used since the time I was in kindergarten. That was 1969. That term along with porch monkey. Bottom line, if a minority group says it's a racial slur. then it is accepted as the gospel truth and must be adhered to. That's how it works in this country. Like it or not, those are the rules. I didn't write them but I didn't do anything not to write it that way. Anyone who speaks against these rules is labeled as a racist and shunned by minorities. Do I agree? No. It is a double standard. I think if we really need to blame anyone, it would be the fact that the KKK ever exsisted and still exsists to a lesser extent today.
As much as I admire the Founding Fathers of this country, during their time they did not see slavery as wrong. With the exception of those that treated them fairly or freed them altoghther, the South still has the reputation as being racist and intolerant of Black Americans of tribal African heritage. In which case, I have to put the blame on Rev. Jackson for that one. Both sides are guilty of one thing or another but at this point in time, the Rev. Jacksons want payback and that is holding back the country as a whole.
Ms. Holcombe knew what she was saying when she used term ''yard ape''. She is a fully grown adult and it was no accident that she chose to demean the evacuees of the hurricane. She showed her true colors and there was nothing even REMOTELY innocent in her choice of terminology. Keep in mind also that Rev. Jackson is a Greenville native who by his own admission hates white people and admits to spitting in their food when he worked at a local eatery. The Administration at Greenville Tech did not want to tangle with him because they would have clearly lost, just like Bob Jones University did when their race issue came up starting during the Reagan administration. It was not resolved until just last year.
So there you have it. Think of it what you will but "that's the way it is."

Well, I suppose CGC's "trollin' trollin' trollin," just as I was when I posted the sound byte from nationally syndicated Clear Channel radio windbag Glenn Beck, who called these same people "scumbags."

I may soon be able to report direct observations of the victims from someone there on the scene. My wife who is a nursing supervisor, is scheduled to leave tomorrow morning for Long Beach, MS, to help manage a temporary clinic that has been set up for victims in need of medical attention. She is anticipated to remain there for two weeks before rotating out to another volunteer.
