Is this a good UHF radio to use on the Ham Band?

I dont' know if they can be programmed down that far or not.

But I CAN tell you that I'v beeen a Motorola Shop tech since 1982 and I HATE Spectra's. If you run into ANY technical problem with one - count me out!!!!

Maratrac, Maxtrac, Mitrek, Syntor, Micor - all good old radios -but I HATE the Spectra. Use it as a doorstop.

The Range-2 438-470 MHz units work fine in the ham bands, but normally those are 25 Watt radios and were called Motorcycle Spectras. The range you find most often is Range-3 450-482 MHz which came in the 45 Watt UHF. My experience has been that the normal Radio Service Software will not let you go down into the Ham bands. The reason is mostly because the PA.

Take a look at the BatLabs site for Spectra (http://www.batlabs.com/spectra.html).

Are they any good, yes absolutely one of the best mobile radios that Motorola ever built. I do agree they can be a pain to work on, but most of that is because of marketing and not technical. But as WR8Y says, if it breaks, it will probably be best used as a door stop. Buy 2.
