I have a used 101EX that im going to use for my first HF rig when i get my general. Is this a good starter rig?

If the driver and finals are good it should be FB. #The FT-101 receives as well as any current radio and with good filters can hold it's own with the best of them. #The only drawback is that you can't QSY without re-tuning the plate but we did that for years and it was never a problem. #Just get in the habit of making sure you have a good dummy load or resonant antenna connected to it when you tune up. #If you tune it up carefully, the tubes will last a very long time. #I have a Kenwood TS-520S with the original S-2001A finals in it and still going strong. #Good luck on the upgrade, look forward to working you on HF.

Yep, the ole 101's are solid performers. I would'nt hesitate to pick up one in really nice condition.

THEIR ARE MANY MODS YOU CAN DO,I HAVE INFO ON A LOT OF THEM,I USE MY FT101EX FOR CAMPING,AND FIELD DAY STILL,ITS WITH ME FOREVER! I ALSO HAVE A TS 830S

Pretty cool entrance rig I'd say! you could learn a lot with that or perhaps a Kenwood TS 520. Yaesu sold a billion of the 101 series rigs, there are lots still around and a lot is known about them. yes it is ive been running a ft 101 e now for 9 year JUST TALK ON IT, I GOT MINE BECAUSE OF THE RECV......
