It is now 1000Z as I write this and I have just checked the FCC Database. W8ANT is cancelled and I am now AE2NY.

This makes myself a good call simply because the AE could mean Amateur Extra or Anthony Ellrodt, either one, and I moved 2 New York. Not bad!

Anthony Ellrodt 2 New York.

And believe it or not, the XYL came up with that one and asked me to see if it was available.

She has a better head on her shoulders than I do sometimes, HI HI!

While I got to admit I'm going to miss your ANT call, Congratulations.

I suppose you're now an official 2-lander now. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Congradulations on the new call! My call is original and say it as Amateur Extra 1 wrong (X) used by teachers to make stuff wrong!

I kinda liked ANT. One of those little creatures. I step on them. Oh well, will have to find somthing else to stomp on. Maybe Glen.

AE is not a real call. Should have stuck with W8 -- but I'm an old fart.

Just out of sheer curiousity, how is not a real call?

"REAL" calls start with W or K (no "A"s or "N"s), one number, and two (or three) letters for the suffix. #That's the way it was back when BBC and I were first licensed.

Of course, that was at least a lifetime ago... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Sadly, you are correct. I'm a geezer.

Wow, that was close! I thought for a bit that perhaps my call wasn't a real one. Maybe it isn't though...maybe a real call starts with a number and is follwed by 2 letters, like 1AW, now there's a real call!

Reminds me of some of the historic AM broadcast stations that had the old 3-letter calls (like WSM, WWL, WBZ, KFI, etc). When they got bought out by a new outfit, they gave up their historic callsign and changed to some humdrum 4-letter combination with no distinction whatever.

Congrats on the new call, Anthony! Of course, I won't be able to QSO with you on air now, as your call doesn't start with a W, K, WA, or WB. Why, you could turn out to be pirating that new-fangled call, or WORSE, be one of thos newbys who hasn't been licensed for 25 years.

Just Kidding, of course. I'm old, but not yet THAT much of a fart! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

I, too, will miss the "ANT". UP AND AT 'EM, AE2NY! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I heard you changed your call,
And now I wonder, with a frown,
Is your ANT all really gone,
And finally taken down?
And is your beam unboomed and banged
A'rattlin' on the ground?
An ANT no more to send
A dot, a dash, a sound?

Ha!

The possiblilities are endless. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'll miss the 'ANT' also, but tis a good call, and at least your call matches the call district you are in and even reflects your location (NY)... and you license class. Nice.

(I didn't say AE1AE was an Amateur callsign. It was a MARS callsign issued me by the Army in Germany based on my German license at the time, DL4AE.)

But AE2NY is indeed a very cool call, as ae2nyone can see!

Great call Anthony. Don't let the naysayers get to you. I can remember some of the older guys with the K#xxx calls saying the older guys of their time said they wouldn't talk to them cuz they didn't have real calls or weren't real hams. The guys with calls like mine endured the same nonsense. Luckily I got mine long enough after they were first started there wasn't much of that. Now I hear it from the 1x3 calls around here and older that the kc whatever calls are not real calls, etc. The use of the call is the proof if the person is a real ham or not, not how the call is structured. Enjoy the new areas to roam on the band and the new toys to play with.
