Public Service agencies often forget or put little value on the Army of Ham Radio Operators.
Now as the Cell Phone Tower batteries fail and the generators run out of fuel, they are finding Hams, Provide their own power, are not fixed to one frequency and can erect their own antennas to replace those ripped out by the wind. Of course the Tech only Hams have to readjust to no repeaters or try to reach repeaters out of the area.
Hams are very resourceful when it comes to charging batteries and finding a communication path. When you can’t make a phone call out, a Ham can call out on the radio to an area where the phones still work and handle health and welfare traffic.
From individual to Ham - to local net - to HF distance net - back to local net - to local phone call, messages of wellbeing are welcomed.
Listen on 146.52 and other calling frequencies, and you will find me on 146.78 Western Oregon VHF Emergency Net, or 3980 KHz Oregon Emergency Net.
So as the batteries die and the Public Service Comms fail, be ready and able (Trained) to step in when asked, (and you will be asked) to provide the only communication route often remaining after a disaster like Katrina.
