View Full Version : KH6BB (USS Missouri) Special Event

KH7JJ
08-30-2005, 02:10 AM
September 2, 2005 marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Japanese surrender papers on board the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, formally ending World War II. #Missouri will be holding extensive ceremonies on board September 2, and the ship's club station KH6BB will be on the air as well. #On CW we will be using the original Vibroplex key that was used on board in 1945 to send the first news of the surrender signing; the key has been loaned to KH6BB for the event by the Maritime Museum of Monterey CA, with permission to use the key on the air.

First operations from KH6BB will take place on September 2 at 0000Z (note that this is the afternoon/evening of September 1 in the US), because this time corresponds to 0900 September 2 in Tokyo Bay, the time and date that the papers were originally signed. #At this time we will re-transmit the exact message that was sent from Missouri in 1945 reporting the signing (see text of message below). #Since Missouri's hull number is BB-63, the primary operating frequency will be 14.063 MHz CW. #Depending on propagation, alternate frequencies will be 18.073 and 21.063 MHz. #There may be combined SSB/CW operations on 14.263, 18.163, or 21.363 MHz. #Operations will continue until approximately 0600Z depending on propagation.

KH6BB will also be operating on September 3 and 4 from about 0000-0600Z (Friday September 2 and Saturday September 3 local time in the US), possibly earlier depending on propagation. #There may be operations on September 2 and 3 around 1600-1800Z, again depending on propagation. Check the KH6BB web page event calendar at <www.kh6bb.org> for last minute details on times and frequencies. #We hope to hear LOTS of hams on the air for this VERY special event.

The original message was short and to the point.

Somehow, it seems that they lost the war, but won the technology battle. I take my hat off to the Japanese people and commend them for all they have accomplished since that sad time. I hope that in my lifetime, I may have the honour of visiting that great group of Islands.

My dad, a WWII veteran who fought the Nazis with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy (rest in peace) was never able to forgive the Japanese for Corregidor. Hopefully our generation will never have to suffer the way these men did at the hands of any enemy, present or future! While we ponder the Japanese surrender 60 years ago, let us say a prayer for our soldiers who are overseas fighting terrorism on our behalf. Words cannot express what we owe them for their selfless sacrifice.

Original post has nothing to do with ham radio...Nazi`s,Japan, ww2 etc. is just part of the history.Instead of celebrating the wining,I would like to see one of you wariors to celebrate the peace.

There is peace only because we won. We will celebrate both.

And I will celebrate the memory of my gallant family members who fought and especially those who made the supreme sacrifice. We buried the widow of one of those heroes last month (my aunt), who mourned the loss of her beloved for over sixty years.

Einstein was wrong. Love of your country, and support of her people, has nothing whatsoever to do with any idea of personal superiority. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Actually, I think he was probably specifically referring to the extreme form of "nationalism" that was the National Socialist party (aka. "Nazis"). Their version supposed a superior race, the Aryan. The remarks cannot be assumed to apply everywhere.

I had the honor of operating from the Missouri on 2 August 2005 with the original poster, KH7JJ. The events planned commemorate a very significant event in world history. I don't think it adds anything to drag this thread out into an argument over who "won" or to try to tie it to subsequent and present wars.

Instead, let's all listen for the re-broadcast of the original transmission, and if propagation allows, work this historic ship. The event being celebrated was the official end of a conflict that cost approximately 60 million lives. Let's not belittle it by arguing.

k4jf, I do agree with you.Everyone knows who were the bad guys during ww2. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Albert Einstein(rip)said many things...he just hated nazis.
The Encyclopedia Britannica says of Einstein's early education that he "showed little scholastic ability." It also says that at the age of 15, "with poor grades in history, geography, and languages, he left school with no diploma." Einstein himself wrote in a school paper of his "lack of imagination and practical ability." In 1895, Einstein failed a simple entrance exam to an engineering school in Zurich.

This exam consisted mainly of mathematical problems, and Einstein showed himself to be mathematically inept in this exam. He then entered a lesser school hoping to use it as a stepping stone to the engineering school he could not get into, but after graduating in 1900, he still could not get a position at the engineering school!

I have worked the folks on BIG MO many times ( I am an associate member of the USS HORNET group) and wish them success on this endevor.

A man is not judged by how he treats his allies, but by how he treats his defeated foes. Peace must have Honor to be a lasting peace. Bless those who now serve, will serve and those of us who have served in the past. War is a terrible thing, and devastates all who participate, not just those whom "loose".

If you haven't been there, you will never truly understand. If you have served during conflict, you will never forget.

If Mr. Einstein really said that he was utterly wrong. It is only natural to defend what is yours and therefore the country which is yours deserves the utmost support. How can anyone question the value of nationalism, really patriotism after 9/11/01. They hate us because of who we are and we must continue to respond to this hatred. If it takes bombs and missiles I am very glad we have them at our disposal and the patriots to deploy them as needed.

May you have as great a time and many more contacts.

No man cherishes peace as much as those who have tasted war.

Peace is neither won nor maintained by being unwilling to fight. It is kept -- and restored, when necessary -- by those willing to put their lives on hold and on the line so that others may enjoy peace.

World War II was largely caused by those who were unwilling to fight for what was right.

Chamberlain and other "pacifiers" permitted the Nazis and the Japanese warlords to build huge militaries and armaments. These militaries and armaments were built in clear vilolation of treaties to which they were parties. Had the "pacifiers" chosen to ACT -- instead of TALK -- at the first sign of agression, millions of lives would not have been lost, and the U.S. taxpayer would not have had to foot the bill to re-build both Europe and Asia.

Agressors are never satisfied. They will continue to take until someone steps up with the guts and power to stop them. The Japanese took over Asia, murdered hundreds of thousands, starved hundreds of thousands more, and enslaved millions. Then they attacked the U.S. because they perceived that we would not permit their agression to go unchecked.

Hitler took over Europe while "negotiating" to prevent interference. Millions died because of Chamberlain's lack of backbone, but he was not alone. Even Charles Lindberg was duped by Hitler.

We celebrate not nationalism, but a victory over agression and a restoration of freedoms. Remember that the U.S. paid to rebuild Germany and Japan. Remember also that they were neither forced to become subservant to the U.S, nor to adopt U.S. laws.

BTW, Albert Einstein's comment was made as a condemnation of Hitler's Nazi -- nationalist -- party. He, his Jewish brothers and sisters, and all "undesirables' -- by Hitler's definition -- were slated to be exterminated by Hitler.

History is a good teacher -- if we are smart enough to learn from it.

The olive branch of peace flourishes only when the sword of war is sharp and ready -- and held in the hands of nations with both resolve and compassion. The olive branch of peace is quickly trampled when the sword is rusty, dull, and sheathed on the hips of those without either resolve or compassion.

My son and daughter-in-law, as well as multiple in-laws and close family are serving in the military. They, and those who went before them, are the ONLY reason that we have freedom.

I would be willing to bet that none of your family is serving. If they were, you would not be belittling the sacrifices that bought YOUR FREEDOM -- and at a very high price. Neither peace nor freedom is free. Some are willing to offer to pay the costs. Others....
