Neither.

They both have about a million functions I'd never use. The simpler the better.

I'll keep my Kenwood TS-530s thanks very much . Not a bunch of bells and whistles , but it has the best reciever of any rig I have ever used . And I've used a few .I'd just take the money and put up a better antenna system and hang onto the old 530 .

Neither. About $80000 more then what I need in my shack. My 775DSP works just fine, just as my FT-840!

Well, if the manufacturers will kindly lend me one of each, I'll be more than happy to do an in-depth review and comparison. In about five years...

In the QST review the 9000D seemed to come out head and shoulders ABOVE the FT-7800!! I guess the biggest problem the 9000D had was there there was not a 3 kc roofing filter.

But for TWO radios in one, for single box SO2R, why would anyone buy TWO FT-7800s?

If money was no object, and I had to chance to get one of those radios, I would get the IC-7800. Looking at these two rigs I really like the display on the IC-7800 better then the FTDX-9000D . Also the FTDX-9000D only has one 32bit DSP Processor (if I read that correctly) the IC-7800 has four. The roofing filters are options with the FTDX-9000, the 3kc roofing filter comes standard (or so I read) on the IC-7800. Also the IC-7800 is $10,999 not $11, 500.. Of course that $500 wouldn't make much of a difference if you could afford the IC-7800 in the first place.

I guess my choice has some bias towards Icom, since my current HF radio is an IC-718. Far cry from the 7800, but I have made plenty of contacts with it, and I suspect to use this right for awhile longer. When I have my dream contest stationan and some nicer radios, I still expect to use the 718 as a digitial radio, or just a back-up/portable SSB rig.

The 7800... #Ever since Vertex Standard came and changed things up with Yaesu, I have shyed away from Yaesu. This is especially true of their customer service and maintenance folks. I have not heard positive comments from multiple people.#

I was a Yaesu loyalist, but not much anymore. #Icom has become my company of choice.

I would still try out the 9000 just to see what it's like. #

However, I think I would go with a 756 ProII or Pro III as my main HF rig. #Not to mention saving 7k in money for other uses amateur and non amateur.

Tec-Tec Orion II, K2 with all the options, and a SDR-1000. I'd still have enough money left over for the tower and beam. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

If money was no object then the sensible choice would be the ICOM. It has been in service for about 5 years with the Japenese Military and GOV. So they have had a chance to cure the bugs,on the other hand the Yaeseau is a new radio, give it a year at least to cure the bugs.

It all depends what you want to do with the radio. I don't know about the Yaesu, but the Icom uses the same receiver architecture and mixing principle as the simple IC-718 which costs about one fifteenth the price. If you are a CW operator primarily, CW is CW is CW. And there is no difference in transmitted quality between $10,000 of CW and $25 of CW. So basically you are paying a small fortune for old technology wrapped up in oodles of cosmetics.
