Do High-Fat Diets Prompt Too Much Snacking?

Aug. 2, 2005 -- If you find yourself snacking all the time, you may want to check how much fat is in your diet.

In recent lab tests, rats on a high-fat diet snacked more than those on low-fat diets. Shots of an appetite-curbing hormone didn't change that.

Researchers working on the study included Mihai Covasa, PhD, a Pennsylvania State University assistant professor of nutritional sciences. The findings appear in The Journal of Nutrition.

High-Fat Feast

Unlike people, the rats didn't have around-the-clock access to snacks. They couldn't raid the refrigerator in the middle of the night or nibble here and there as they pleased.

Instead, high-fat, high-calorie snacks were only available for three hours a day. It's as if a big slab of cheesecake was wheeled out in front of people, with a three-hour clock running.

Meanwhile, the rats weren't going hungry. They either got high-fat or low-fat meals. When the snacks appeared, the rats on the high-fat diet ate more than those on the low-fat diet.

What About Weight?

The rats on the high-fat diet overindulged on fatty, high-calorie snacks. But they didn't gain more weight than the other rats.

What's their secret? It's simple. The rats just cut back at meals to make up for the snacks, instinctively budgeting for the high-fat binges.

"Rats are notorious in compensating for food to maintain a constant body weight," states Covasa in a Penn State news release. As a result, the rats all gained the same amount of weight after 20 days, he notes.

Hormone's Effects

The test got a twist when the researchers gave the rats shots of a hormone called CCK (cholecystokinin).

CCK is one of several hormones tied to appetite. It triggers feelings of fullness, effectively telling the body, "Got enough food now; stop eating."

The CCK shots curbed snacking in the rats on the low-fat diet. But the shots had less impact on rats on the high-fat diet.

The rats on the high-fat diet apparently were less sensitive to feeling full, which boosted snacking more and cut sensitivity to CCK, write the researchers.

Keep in Mind

The study didn't involve people. No human study of snacking and CCK has been reported, states the news release. In addition, fat is an important part of the diet, but the type and amount of fat matters.

Also, the rats were free to eat high-fat snacks every day -- not as an occasional treat.

Lastly, CCK isn't the only thing that makes us put the fork down or seal up the bag of potato chips. But the hormone is "one important feedback signal" that would normally limit eating, write the researchers.

I went on a high fat protein type atkins diet. My cravings actually went down. Sugar and other carbs make you want to snack IMO.

I like most foods, but when I want to snack on something, nothing makes me feel better than a chocolate bar (except maybe a peanut butter & jelly sandwich!).

I do high protein, for weightlifting. #For my favorite feelgood food, that would have to be the grain, or hop category, in liquid form.

The other one is ice cream... None of which is on this list, so I opted for "other".

I’ve been on a starvation diet for the last few years. I usually have a ham and cheese sandwich on the way to work and then another at lunch time. The rest of the day I rarely eat anything at all. On weekends I will have a pretty good meal once a day and usually my two sandwiches, generally ham and cheese but sometimes just for a change I’ll have turkey and cheese.

I still have regular movements and have not really lost any weight. I still tip in at 214#.

At work we have a nifty digital scale that tells me I still am overweight. According to it I should weigh 175# @ 6’ 2” with a heavy frame I think it is goofy.

My feel good snack of choice iced oatmeal cookies and coffee with milk or a glass of 2% milk. Rarely I’ll have a candy bar, when I can get them I really like O’Henry bars otherwise its Heresy’s with almonds.

They have had a 'new' fried food at the State Fair for the last 2 or 3 yrs. This is the first I had heard of it. One of the local stations did a thing on the different fried foods at the fair, funnel cakes, etc and at one of the funnel cake places, one run by a local family they had come up with a new deep fried 'treat'. They put a peach on a stick dip it in something like the funnel cake batter and drop it in a deep fryer for awhile. I have no clue how they tell when it is done but it is served in a paper 'boat' and a plastic fork is used to eat it. People claim it is good. Another place has deep fried candy bars but those have been around for several year. Somebody also told me some heretic someplace came up with deep fried oreo cookies. That is just going to d*** far in my book.

Speaking of oreos, that would probably be my food of choice for a comfort food, provided it was served with a large glass of milk for dipping and there were plenty of oreos. Unfortunately my Dr. won't allow me to have those or anything else fun to eat like CHOCOLATE candy.

Shoot, they might as well just start selling deep-fried lard and get it over with. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif #Lord knows, I'm no fitness guru, but even I know when certain concoctions are just waaaay over the line. #I believe that line may have begun at deep-fried Twinkies. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif #I probably don't even want to know what they're going to try frying next. #Pop-Tarts? #Moon Pies? #Entire triple-decker cheeseburgers dipped in batter, deep-fried, and served on sticks like corn dogs? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I don't know about deep-fried lard, but fried pork rinds are pretty close. I am suprised that no one has mentioned fried ice cream! Oops, I guess I just mentioned it!
