Did the ship return fire?
If no, why not?

You didn't read the article... or you would know the answer to this question... You could NOT possibly read the article and NOT know the answer...

Our Marines and Sailors on the two ships (which total about five football fields in length and can probably be spotted from the Space Station) should try to find whoever launched the errant mortars and tell them "the funniest joke in the world," so they can laugh until they die.
At least, that's how it worked on Monty Python. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

What they need is to bring the Mighty "MO" and the "New Jersey" out of moth balls and sit about 20 miles off shore. Stick about 10 rounds in the hold of each, that would be enough to flatten Jordon, then warn them if anyone as much as lights a match they will start a bombardment.
The Jordainians would clean up there act real fast, and run the trouble makers back to Syria. # # http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif #

The only problem with that.. is that they are bigger targets.
Those boobs would probably shoot at THAT and miss!
Our poor lads would have coronaries laughing so hard!

That's the spirit; lob projectiles into a place that's one of the few Arab countries that'll openly admit to friendly relations to the US and its operations in Iraq.
And we all sit in amazement why the US is hated.

I doubt anyone was laughing as GQ was sounded. I'm surprised they are not at that state in any port outside of the US. Any Navy types care to comment?
Certainly what was fired wasn't going to sink the ship. But it'll kill anyone unfortunate to be around the impact and for that I again doubt people on those ships were laughing.

The "terrorists" actually fired 3 shots. One hit near the gate to the area killing one Jordanian soldier and wounding another. The second one hit a hospital but, fortunately, did not injure anyone. The third actually traveled into Israel and struck a vehicle, but, again fortunately, the driver wasn't really injured since the device did not explode.
The Jordanian authorities have already identified 4 men who rented the warehouse (late last week) from which the shots were fired. Their photos have already been on the news.
However, it seems that the training that these men obtained wasn't that good! As such I say to the terrorist organizations "keep up the good work".

I see some you think this is so damn funny that it's something to joke about. #I can assure you that there was no laughter going on in the vicinity of this little party.
While I didn't see any action, I did spend 6 years in the U.S. Navy. Kinda makes me wonder whether any of you cracking jokes did?

I have to agree. I am pretty callous, but the posts here are not cool. I am thankful that the US was spared yet another tragedy, and my thoughts go to the wounded and murdered soldiers and their families.

K9STH,
Glen,a word of caution, with the average reading comprehension on QRZ,your statement could be misinterpeted to mean keep firing at US Vessels, whereas I'm sure you meant to keep up the poor marksmanship and poor training. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I definitely mean the poor training, markmanship, etc.
Actually, if they can't do it with a bomb of some type they don't seem to be very successful.

I think ya'll are oversensitive...
1. That ship is in a semi-friendly foreign port... You can bet they are standing port & starboard watches, which means a MINIMUM of 50% of the crew is on board at all times... and a Navy ship can get underway with as little as 1/3 of the crew on board EASILY...
2. As far a shooting back, ya have to identify a target in order to shoot at something... The idiot terrorists fired three shots and ran like Hell... you can bet on that too... So there was nothing to shoot AT...
3. Laughing... Sailors Laughing... Not on your life at first... General Quarters, then Prepare to get underway, and then sit on your cans waiting to find out what the hell is going on... Then when the facts come out, the relief of the stress as the adrenilin flow slows, and the coking and joking will start among the crew... and there will be plenty of 'terrorist's can't shoot' jokes flowing around...
4. But above all else there will be a BUNCH of pissed off sailors, because liberty will be canceled until the problem is 'for sure' resolved... and that could be several days...
5. However, to keep their minds off of the problem, the officers will find a bunch of busy work to keep all hands occupied for the duration of the problem... Passageways need cleaning all of a sudden, paint will need scraped, antennas will need additional de-salting, overhead will need to be re-cleaned... you name it, these fellas will be doing all sorts of busy work for the next few days.... just to keep them occupied crabbing about the extra work rather than letting them think too much about the problems out there that might be...
Been there...Done that... SOSDD...
DAM* I wish I were still young enough to serve...
Best time of my life was life as a skimmer...

Damn right Harry, tell it like it is. Those sailors are pissed off big time. They had to give up the women waiting for them at their port of call, that means they still have a lot of pent up energy to burn off that they can't, if you know what I mean.
Also, the remarks here are some what cold and thought less. My son is over there and he's US Navy, next generation. My son could have been on one of those ships and that scares the hell out of me.
What I want to know is why after the Cole attack better security wasn't in place? These ships were sitting ducks and according to CNN they would not have been unable to defend against this king of attack. Which as far as I'm concerned should not have been broadcasted.
The Navy needs to look at this situation and come up with a security plan to protect our ships while in port.
Just think about the sailor standing watch on the bow of the ship and hearing and seeing that thing coming towards him. I'm sure that kid was scared #and more than likely need to change his shorts when it was over.
I hope they find where the rockets were fired from and kill the scum that fired them.
Quote[/b] ]The U.S. ships were in port so sailors could train with regional partners, U.S. Navy Cmdr. Jeff Breslau told CNN. "It's very unusual for U.S. ships to be under attack in this part of the region."
He said the U.S. military ships have left the port.
[Bold is mine]
Now you KNOW the sailors are peeved!
I can hear it now:
"GD terrorists, taking away a perfectly good liberty port... If I ever get close to one of these SOBs... etc etc"
I know sailors! World Peace is an important concept, but screw-up a liberty port and sh*t will fly... hehehe

Actually yes, not in military, and yes as mentioned at the TIME it isn't a laughing matter, but afterwords? hell yes, to relieve stress.. #
Ask someone in the military who HAS been in combat if they later laugh at stupid sh*t before you get on your HIGH HORSE in judgment at others.
