"...And the foreign student said, is it really true, there are lions and elephants too, in Picadilly Circus?"
Who knows where that line is from?
Now read this story:
If a group of prominent ecologists have their way, lions and elephants could someday be roaming the Great Plains of North America.
Scientists suggest relocating African species to North America (http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/science/08/17/wild.america.ap/index.html?section=cnn_topstories)
I'd say this has a snowballs chance in hell of happening, but then Stranger things have been happening...
Still a dumb idea tho.

Just because an idea is dumb is no assurance that the idea won't get implemented, esp if tax money can be spent on the idea. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

I say put them in Yellowstone Natl Park- the elk have been thinned out too much by wolves, so let lions prey on wolves. The elephants can browse with the buffalo.

Sounds sensible to me. # http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Unless times have changed, farmers have been able to rid their land of pests from deer eating their crops to now perhaps lions killing their sheep. #
It'll be one heck of a job dragging a dead elephant out of the peanut patch though. # http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

.Well,....on the plus side of predator introduction. #Packs of roving, wild hyenas, would change the dynamics of the illegal immigrant invasion. #They would present SOME danger to U.S. citizens, but I think the trade off would be a good one. #Hyenas can be fenced out or shot, and are far less dangerous the millions of wild jackals they would displace. We would have far fewer human casualties, and at least citizens would be allowed to protect themselves.

Didn't realize things were getting so bad in your country. Maybe you should invest in a reloading setup. #For a modest outlay, you can set up your own production line. I believe you can still buy most of the supplies through the mail. Don't forget souvenirs on that next family trip, either. #A few dozen bricks of legal ammo will rekindle many found memories of your families "trip to the Old West."

Girl in Kansas dies posing with tiger. (http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/08/18/tiger.attack.ap/)
Who wins when stupid animal ideas are implemented? Girl dies, tiger dies. Oops???

rdn -- I assume you're talking firearm here and not ammo?
California has, of course, led the way in anti-gun legislation. And wasn't I just reading somewhere that the Federal assault weapons ban was allowed to expire? Good!

There have been African animals "roaming" the prairies of north-central Texas for years. There is a very large wild life "preserve" just outside Glen Rose, Texas, which is about 60 miles south-southwest of Fort Worth.
The big cats are restricted to a smaller area than the other animals, but they definitely are allowed to roam.
There was a smaller "preserve" between Dallas and Fort Worth a while back. However, the land got to be too valuable for housing projects so it was closed down.
