After several years of argument The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English not German will be the official language of the European Union. As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that the spelling of English had some room for improvement.A simple 10-year phase-in plan containing ten extremely minor changes in English spelling was proposed by the German Government’s Ministry for Culture. The purpose of this plan is to adopt a simplified form of English that would be more understandable to the non-English speaking people of Europe. This new English would be known as "Euro-English".The first year will usher in the most obvious change. With the exception of the double “e” and the double “o” all double letters will be replaced with only one. Double leters have been a confusion and deterent to acurate speling for many non-English speakers. In the second year a folow up change wil adres the confusing “ee” and “oo” spelings. “Ee” wil be replaced by an “i” (or where apropriate by “ie”). “Oo” wil be replaced by “u”.In the third year the troublesome “ph” sound, often confusing to non-English speakers, wil be logicaly replaced with the more direct "f". This wil also make many words like fotograf much shorter. In the Fourth year the soft “c” wil be replace by an “s”. This wil sertainly make English more foneticaly acurate. In the Fifth year the hard "c" wil be replased by a "k". This should klear up pronunciation and keyboards kan have one les leter. By the sixth year the “ea” wil be simplified to a more ekonomikal “a” that is more pronounsable to non English spakers. The seventh yar kan sie more komplikated shanges posible. It wil be the time to get rid of the konfusing English silent “e”. The eight yar wil find people mor reseptiv to shange. It wil be time to enkourage mor radikal steps such as replasing "th" with "z" In ze ninz yar, of kours, shange "w" viz "v". In yar ten “eu” and “ue” vil biekom “u”. The French will now have to compromise. You know, the French are always willing to compromise so long as you do it their way.

Actually it would be a lot easier, as swedish is just simplified version of german, but the english speakers might have problems with some words as for example, 'good' is 'bra' in swedish and 'full speed' would translate 'full fart'
BTW It is Norway that does not belong to EU, the swedes are out just from the common currency system. As the joke goes, most dangerous people in world are a finn with a knife, a dane with a bag of beer and a swede with a credit card. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I would agree with that! I have a nice puukko I got in Jyvaskyla. I like Finns and Finland quite a bit.
It has been well over five years since I last saw that one. Didn't it used to end with a NAZI epithet about the master race of Europe conquering the world? I am almost sure that it did. This version is very watered down.

ADA,
Oops, probably XYL's friend knows we have this age old tradition of picking on each other between the neighbours. It is like 4 cranky old men living next door to each other and when one dies, the rest will cry their hearts out in the funeral. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif I guess, there is something similar between the U.S. and Canada
XA,
Great!! You have discovered the 'heartlands' also, instead of just Helsinki. One finnish author of stories about the nature and wilderness wrote about 'puukko' that for a finn, it is his first weapon and last resort.
Back in 1986 I spent 6 weeks as an youth exchange student in one great Michigan family. They took me for a trip from Canton, MI all the way down to New Orleans. The trip is on my list of 'things and places to be revisited, when the kids can take care of themselves'. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Wegrzyn, where ever you are.

One thing about Finland is that they are the only country to repay their debts from the World War II era to the United States in full (did not have to be "forgiven" like every other country).

STH,
Yes, they took the loan already after WWI to feed the nation and the final payment was in 1976. There was just a few years moratorium during the WWII. Although the sum of the loan was not particularly high, duly payback gained enormous amount of goodwill for our country among the american public, especially during the recession years of the 1930's. Many senior americans, I have met, still remember it. I Heard many times: "From Finland?? Oh, you paid your war debt, didn't ya."
To be honest, before the american loan we had a pretty bad reputation as a debtor. The french lost a pretty penny as our debt to them was paid back in the finnish home currency during the high inflation.

Having been reading the postings for 5 years I thought most of them were already being written in Euro English !
That was interesting news, I 'm surprised it hasn't appeared in any papers over the pond, but perhaps I'm not. All the news these days features thug Moslems.
