President Bush has asked us to join the Citizens Corp.
Local Community Citizen Corp is lead by a Citizens Corp Council. The Council is responsible for inventoring volunteers, their skills and experience. These volunteers will be identified to Agencies and Organizations like the Police, Fire Department, EMS, Red Cross, Salvation Army and others.

One a volunteer has decided which of the above they want to support, the Citizens Corp will co ordinate with the proper Agency to give them the required training.

Some Citizen Corp Councils are considering the formation of a Auxillary Communications Service made up of volunteer licensed Amatuers.

There is not only training available but equipment can be supplied from govt stores or purchased on the open market.

There is $240M in the 2003 budget for the operation of the Corp.

Well, as an active member of ARES in my county (Davidson, NC)we are known to the local fire, law, and medical authorities. We make a point to keep in touch and train often for unsuspected occurrances. This new group the President is wanting to form is just another name for ARES in my area. As volunteers we use our own equipment.The rigs and antennas we have installed in the various places around the county we donated are our older rigs when we upgraded to new.We could use the financial help though as we do need different things from time to time. So far, the county is receptive to the hams here and we do help when needed.
Is the new program something different from what we already are doing??

The money is in the 2003 budget for a trained and certified group of radio operators and technicians to serve as an Auxillary or Reserve resource to the communities first responders and Emergency Management.
There are funds for training and equipment.
Any licensed amatuer may be considered, however, the selection criteria has not been explained.
The training has not been developed.
The certification has not been explained.
