View Full Version : Bozo on the air in Cleveland

There is a person, who we think is a radio amateur operator here in Cleveland who is raiing havoc with the repeaters in the greater Cuyahoga County area. He is using the most foul language that I have heard on the radio on 2 meters in my 40 some odd years of being a ham radio operator.
I want to tell Cleveland Ohio operators to ignore this idiot, so that he will stay on the air long enough so that operators with df-ing equipment can find him.
This indivudual has, according to sources I will not reveal, has also used one of the local phone patches to call the local 911 system and make weird comments to EMS operators.
He has insulted, by his mear presence, everyone who has had the misfortune of being on the air while he is out there making his crass and crude comments, he also has interrupted several public service events during the times that he has been on the air.
Personally, I would like those who are in Cleveland, to get together and try to DF this idiot and help FCC get him off of the air and to a place where he belongs.
There is nothing else that I can say about the situation, other than to express my deep and dishearted disgust at such horripilative actions.
CU all later on down the keys.

Have you tried recording some of his tirades and sending it in to Riley Hollingsworth at the FCC?
If it's that bad on a repeater, especially making comments like that to EMS, the county officials can send in a complaint to the FCC and your repeater will get shut down permanently.
If he's using autopatches, it's obvious either he's a club member, knows someone who is, or was once a club member. Many clubs don't release their autopatch codes unless you're a paying member. I'd start your search there. Sorta like a disgruntled employee.
Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

Why do @$$hats get a thrill out of that? Don't they realize that a small number of dedicated amateurs with DF gear may park across the street and record everything? I would if it were to happen here

sheesh it is elementary to catch him...every one has a pattern ( even normal ordinary legal operators )
* time of day usually heard / not heard
* frequencies heard in am or pm
* days of the week heard / not heard
* how LONG he usually stays on one frequency ( minutes/hours ) aggravating folks.
* how long he stays with folks responding to him
* how long he stays with all ignoring him
then plan for those times he IS active
as an example...if he is heard every tuesday around 3 - 5 pm on a certain frequency, then be listening with DF gear.
if he stays longer with some one arguing BACK at him, you MIGHT arrange for some one to argue with him...your decision
just hope he dont read this post.

Why would you say that?! Ha.
You are right and there is much more as well. But we won't go into that publicly here. Some hams with a dab of free time and certain equipment can find this dude in a few days. One of the problems, though, that I have run into, is once the guy is located, some hams go into vigilante mode. That's the worst possible route.
Fortunately, this is quite a rare occurrance, and always has been. It has to be handled properly, and it can be.
I hope they find him, do the right thing, and get him put into jail. We all know the time it took to nail that California idiot this last time. That's sad that it takes so long, and I understand the motivation to do the vigilante bit, knowing how slowly legal wheels turn. It is, though, the best way, not only because it increases the amount of evidence, but makes the crime (and it is a federal felony) more serious.
Good luck in locating him.
Ed
I would contact the SCM, K8QOE, and ask him to contact the LIC in the area.
"bozo's" do get caught. If you read the FCC reports, you will find that several have been caught on the 145.35MHz repeater in Cincinnati.

Catch him, please. When the band opens up, this clown booms into southeastern Michigan.

Having helped to chased down a bozo or two in my time, I have a suggestion for the repeater owner/operators.
Make arrangments so you can cut the audio only between the receiver strip and transmitter strip in the repeater. Most Bozos don't run full duplex (they can't hear themselves coming out of the repeater) When they upkey, they still hear the squelch tail. It is possible to have the repeater transmitter key up and "Kerchunk" when the COR unkeys, giving the same illusion to the miscreant. This helps to keep the offender on the air long enough for the DF crew to track 'em down and get the goods on the soon-to-be-former Amateur Radio Operator. Have someone keep the idiot engaged by talking to him on the repeater's reverse pair. Don't threaten to "DF" his posterior, no need to give him ideas that you are engaged in that pursuit as you speak.
Each transmitter has its own RF Fingerprint. Look at this guys signal on a spectrun analyzer and take a screen shot. The commission may be able to use it for evidence. Tape record the tyro's tyrades as well.
Good luck in nailing that LID.

Wait a minute! When I was a kid, growing up in Northeastern Ohio, Bozo was on the TV every day, from Cleveland! Maybe it's his ghost come back to haunt Cleveland?

nice idea, but around here, I cannot think of a single repeater with that level of command control.
As stated, every transmitter has a fingerprint. A sound card and PSK31 software can be very helpful when looking at the signal ON THE INPUT OF THE REPEATER!
If you have access to the repeater vault/shack/shed/houseing, pull your audio directly off the receiver.
Have several fixed stations monitor the input, report details back to a central reporting person (not a committee, but ONE person, and he/she reports to the committee).
Invest in "dopple-scanners" RDF devices, maybe even a couple "L-Per's" (AM receivers, designed to track down ELT's.
SSB and AM receivers work best when tracking a FM signal. Using a FM receiver, strong FM signals get quiet, while a strong FM signal on an AM or SSB receiver get louder.
Good luck!
They are not easy to track down, it is easier today than it was in 1978, more equipment is avalible, and they all do get caught eventually.
Also, as stated before, NEVER EVER mention on the air that you are out looking. What you are doing is serious, to the playbaby, it is a game, do not play the game.
We did not have cell phones, we used an obscure freq on 220MHz, since there were no scanners that covered that band and very few mobile radios.

He better not! He better be "haunting" Capital records, or KTTV in Los Angeles.

" bozo " is areally a polite term for the idiot.
That kind of stuff wouldnt be going on ...on the police / fire frequencies if so many 2 meter/440 amateur rigs could not be modified to transmit on those frequencies.
dang fools.

quick question? This may sound kinda stupid. But is this guy using a callsign on the air? That would make tracking him down real simply

When American President Andrew Jackson died, a parrot that he owned was supposed to participate in the funeral. At the last moment, the people who organized the funeral took the bird away from the services. The bird was making too many loud, nasty comments.

What we have done around here is to PHONE each other and arrange to meet to DF a miscreant. #NEVER say a word about what you are doing. #Do NOT talk to or about him. Give no hint of what you are up to. #We once DF'ed a guy and CAUGHT him #RED handed sitting in his truck kerchunking the repeater and harassing other hams! #Talk about a jaw dropping to the floor!~!!
.................he now is among the non-licensed thanks to #a dedicated DF team and Mr RH!!http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

nope, sorry, CB's would not work. The last time I listened to CB (I used to service them in the 70's and 80's), the normal range of a 4w CB was about 3 miles due to QRM and QRN. Most of the time, while DF'ing, we would be in quadrants of the repeater coverage area... far to wide of an area for CB radio. Add to that, we needed reliable communications between DF units which would be impossible on CB.
